Partner Institution(s)
Based on level and language ability, IES Abroad places each student with some of the best instructors in the country for both individual instruction and ensemble work. Most of these instructors currently work for prestigious institutions like the orchestra of La Scala, top Italian conservatories and universities, or private academies.
Our Milan Music Program allows you to take courses at the best music institutions in Milan. The institutions that most frequently welcome U.S. semester and full-year students are:
CIVICA SCUOLA DI MUSICA C. ABBADO
The largest private music school in Italy, the Civica Scuola includes offerings in the schools of Jazz, Choral, Classical, Contemporary, and Early Music. The Scuola is well regarded for its Early Music and Music Technology programs. Take instrumental technique and performance classes and/or an English-taught Composition, Theory, or History course arranged by our music coordinator.
CONSERVATORIO G. VERDI
Founded in 1807, the Conservatorio G. Verdi is the largest public music school in Italy, enrolling 2,000 students each year. Some of Italy’s most famous musicians have graduated from or taught at the Conservatorio. Individual instruction can be arranged with faculty from the Conservatorio, based on your skill level.
LA VERDI SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA & CHOIR
The Symphonic Orchestra and Choir of La Verdi was founded in the autumn of 1998 and is made up of 100 members who perform a wide range of musical repertoire, ranging from symphonic to chamber and polyphonic works, from Baroque to 20th-century modern music. The Choir typically sings with the Symphonic Orchestra of Milano Giuseppe Verdi, but also collaborates with various national and international symphonic groups. La Verdi provides an opportunity for you to work alongside professional performers and participate in rehearsals and concerts that fit with your voice or instrument.
UNIVERSITÀ CATTOLICA DEL SACRO CUORE
Founded in 1921, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is located in the old city center in the former ancient monastery of Saint Ambrose. It is also one of the largest private universities in Europe. The Cattolica has some Italian-taught music history courses available to students with the appropriate language background.
Community-Based Learning
Participating in a community-based learning experience in Milan is one of the best ways to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s culture and society. Working alongside local people toward a common goal, you experience firsthand some of the social issues that affect Milan, while contributing your skills toward a community-driven solution.
A community-based learning placement consists of time spent with a local organization, accompanied by a weekly academic, for-credit community-based learning seminar. Through the seminar, you have structured time for reflection, discussion, and research on the issues of your host community.
IES Abroad Milan partners with the local city government’s immigration department to provide a range of communitybased learning opportunities from working to grant asylum to migrants to developing job-training programs. Students also have the opportunity to work with the homeless and atrisk youth through partnerships with nonprofit organizations.
Internships
Did you know that, while in Milan, you can intern as part of your study abroad experience? With a part-time internship, you’ll gain global work experience that will increase your job readiness and give you an advantage after graduation. With an internship, you will:
- Take an important step in your career development by navigating the professional world with our support.
- Learn more about yourself both personally and professionally and build confidence in the process.
- Experience what working in Milan is really like and gain an authentic understanding of the workplace culture while developing real, applicable job skills that will bolster your career readiness.
- Begin building an international network by making connections with coworkers and peers.
All of our internships are supervised and earn IES Abroad credit. You participate in a 3-credit seminar to complement the practical experience you gain during the internship for a greater understanding of work life in your host country.

Daily Life
Part of making you feel at home in Milan is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that prepares you for what’s ahead, housing that is well located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services.
Orientation
Our orientation introduces you to the IES Abroad Milan staff, your fellow students, and the city of Milan.
The program begins with a pre-departure virtual tour and continues with on-site info sessions to get you familiar with the IES Abroad Milan staff, your fellow students, and the city of Milan. Detailed information about housing, public transportation, culture, health and safety, and other important topics are also covered.
After orientation, you participate in a two-week intensive language program designed to help you gain practical language skills and acclimate to the local environment. IES Abroad also schedules several trips and tours to introduce you to the history, culture, and surroundings of Milan.
During this period, your language teacher will help introduce you and your classmates to culture and daily life in Milan!
Housing
We want to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding which landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Milan, it will feel like home.
Homestays – Placements are available in Milanese homes. This is a priceless opportunity to learn about Italian families firsthand and engage directly with Italian culture. You have a private or shared bedroom at your homestay, where you receive breakfast and dinner daily, and you can eat your other meals at the university cafeterias, restaurants, or bars. Commuting time from a typical homestay to the IES Abroad Milan Center can range from 10 to 40 minutes.
Apartments – Share a furnished apartment located in a safe and lively district with three to six IES Abroad students. These apartments are single-sex, and you generally share a bedroom with another student. Single rooms in an apartment carry an additional cost. Apartment life is often enhanced by a live-in Italian roommate called a Community Assistant (CA). These Assistants can help you improve your Italian language skills, get to know the city of Milan, and integrate more fully into the local culture. The Italian CAs also spend time answering questions and working at the IES Abroad Center. Meals are not included, so you normally eat lunch at a local café or a university cafeteria, and prepare your own breakfast and dinner at home. Located on main public transportation routes, apartments are within a 40 minute commute to the Center, and each apartment offers fully equipped kitchens, Internet access, a dishwasher, and a washing machine.
Collegio di Milano - Residence Hall – This residence for Italian and international honors students offers single rooms with private bathrooms and balconies. The facilities include a computer room, library, small gym, private park, security system, kitchenette, laundry facilities, a music practice room, a studio room for art projects, student lounges, and an auditorium for special cultural programs. Breakfast and dinner are provided daily and lunch is available on weekends. Space is limited, and students are chosen by the Collegio based on academic merit. Because of the extra amenities, this option carries an additional cost.
Extracurricular Activities & Cultural Events
Redefine the way you live and learn in Milan through cultural events, such as:
- Attending music performances at the Teatro Alla Scalla Opera House, and many other music festivals, seasons and clubs in town.
- Enjoying music sessions with your fellow classmates
- Going to soccer games
- Visiting museums, cultural events, and local fairs sponsored by Italian peers
