Sustainability is essential.

Sustainability is essential to who we are and how we operate. We recognize that every action—whether in the classroom, on campus, or in the community—has an environmental impact. As part of our Global Good Commitment, we integrate sustainable practices into our academics, operations, and student experiences abroad. From reducing waste and emissions to rethinking how we teach and travel, our approach is ongoing and intentional. Students engage in sustainability through hands-on coursework, meaningful service, and community partnerships around the world. At our Centers and headquarters, we’re actively reducing paper use, investing in carbon offsets, and implementing green infrastructure. We continue to learn, adapt, and grow to support a more just and sustainable world—for today, the future, and the communities we’re privileged to engage with worldwide.

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most progressive cities when it comes to sustainability—and it shows. With more bikes than people, a vast network of bike paths, and a strong cycling culture, emission-free travel is simply a way of life. The city’s canals, green spaces, and compact layout make it not only easy to get around, but enjoyable to explore sustainably.

Amsterdam is also a pioneer in the circular economy, rethinking how the city designs, builds, and reuses resources. From energy-efficient architecture and waste-to-energy programs to eco-friendly hotels and organic food markets, sustainability is woven into everyday life. Creative spaces like De Ceuvel—a former shipyard transformed into a hub for sustainable cafes, offices, and innovation—showcase the city’s commitment to climate-forward urban design.

Whether you’re cycling past wind turbines, shopping zero-waste, or relaxing in one of the city's many parks, Amsterdam offers a dynamic, design-forward environment where living green doesn’t just feel possible—it feels natural.

Designing the Sustainable City

Be a force for good by participating in our Designing the Sustainable City course, inspired by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This course focuses on sustainable and equitable living respectively, connecting a cohort of students and faculty from a variety of academic backgrounds to discuss, assess, and contribute to solutions for global issues.

In this unique course, students identify the most pressing sustainability and equity issues in their host city and, working in small teams, offer solutions to the issues at the local level, taking into account the environmental, historical, and social characteristics of the area. Upon successful completion of these courses, students earn a micro-credential in Sustainability and Development.

“Since the beginning, we wanted students to have a rather broad understanding of what sustainability is in terms of the kind of scope it allows people to analyze any kind of issue.”

Mission in Motion

Across the globe, IES Abroad students and staff are taking part in countless sustainability efforts—both big and small. From committing to greener daily habits to engaging with local organizations, they’re making meaningful contributions to the communities they call home abroad. Here are just a few examples:

Sara Jacques, one of our Santiago IES Abroad alums, was a finalist for the Global Citizen of the Year Award! Our international jury of IES Abroad staff were impressed by Sara’s commitment to making a positive impact on our environment by initiating a recycling program at the IES Abroad Santiago Center and ensuring the program’s sustainability.

Through Sara’s development of this program, she became more aware of the disproportionate effects of climate change on countries such as Chile that produce such a small amount of the world’s greenhouse gases. It’s students like Sara who support our mission to better the world through global good.

Sara Jacques, IES Abroad Student
“I literally sat with a government official talking about environmental concerns, in Spanish, for an hour. We looked through community plans and talked about programs. I felt so empowered. None of that was in my original plan when I came to Santiago.”
Sara J. • Penn State University • Santiago – Politics, Social Justice & Language

Since the first IES Abroad students arrived in Vienna in 1950, our philosophy has been that study abroad is a catalyst for peace and change. Given the current state of the world, as we face climate issues, systemic racism and inequities within our communities, we see the critical need to elevate our mission and promote global good. As we continue to learn, adapt, and assess our role in combatting these issues, we will drive our mission forward with the Global Good Commitment at our forefront.

Study Abroad with a Commitment to Global Good.
