What is a Chilean student visa?
A student visa for Chile is a legal document adhered to one of the inside pages of your passport that you must have before entering Chile. The visa serves as approval from the Chilean government for you to legally remain in Chile for the duration of your study abroad program.
Do You Need a Visa to Go to Chile?
Depending on your IES Abroad program and citizenship, you may need a student visa to study abroad in Chile. We’ve outlined citizenship options below to help you learn more about your visa requirements.
If you will be going on a Customized & Faculty-Led Program, you may need a student visa depending on the length and nature of your program. Learn more in your myIESabroad account.
If you are a U.S. citizen...
If you are going on one of our semester or academic year study abroad programs, you will need to apply for a student visa for Chile.
You will not need a visa for our Multi-Location Emerging Economies program, summer study abroad programs, or internships. However, you may need one if you plan on extending your stay beyond 90 days after the program.
If you are a non-U.S. citizen...
All students who plan to study abroad in Chile (with the sole exception of Chilean citizens) will need to apply for a Chilean student visa prior to arriving on site in Chile. It is your responsibility to obtain your student visa before your program starts.
Applying for a Student Visa for Chile
Once you are accepted to your semester or year-long IES Abroad program, you will find detailed instructions to apply for a Chilean visa in your myIESabroad account. For now, read below to get an idea of what the process will look like.

HOW
All applications for residence visas are made electronically on the Chilean National Migration Service portal: https://tramites.extranjeria.gob.cl/.

WHEN
Students typically cannot start applying until 90 days before the start of their program.
You should begin gathering your visa application documents as soon as possible to allow maximum time for your visa applicatoin to be processed.

WHERE
All applications for residence visas are made electronically on the Chilean National Migration Service portal: https://tramites.extranjeria.gob.cl/.

COST
The Chilean visa fee is subject to change, but for U.S. citizens it is $211.09 USD. The fee for other nationalities may vary. Visa fees are determined by the Chilean government. All fees will be paid directly on the Chilean National Migration Service portal.
