The Universidad de Salamanca, the oldest university in Spain and one of the most prestigious in Europe, opened in 1218. In this full-immersion program, most classes are offered by Cursos Internacionales of Universidad de Salamanca, one of the preeminent centers in the teaching of Spanish in the world, and conversation classes are taught by IES Abroad language faculty. Each four-week session is equal to an entire semester of Spanish language study, with a range of language levels available. You are able to participate in both program sessions.

Why Salamanca?
Salamanca’s fame lies in the prestige of its university and the graceful architecture of the Plaza Mayor and surrounding neighborhoods. The Universidad de Salamanca, the oldest university in Spain and one of the most prestigious in Europe, opened in 1218. Tradition and history permeate the city, where construction on its “new” Cathedral began in the 1500s.

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences. That is why we partnered with Cursos Internacionales of Universidad de Salamanca. All courses are conducted in Spanish.

Universidad de Salamanca (USAL) currently enrolls approximately 30,000 students annually, 7,000 of which are international students.
USAL is five minutes away from Salamanca’s historic Plaza Mayor and the IES Abroad Center and has numerous departments and university schools spread out among the Salamanca campus.
Courses
You enroll in a 3-credit Spanish language course and a 1-credit elective course. These two courses are taught at the University of Salamanca. You will also take a 1-credit conversation course at the IES Abroad Center. Courses are taught in Spanish.
If you are at the beginning Spanish level, you enroll in a required vocabulary course as your elective. All other students choose a thematic elective. Past electives have included:

Requirements
- 18 years of age
- In good standing at your home school
- 2.5 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale (GPAs under 2.5 will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
- Graduate students and continuing education students encouraged to apply
- No previous study in Spanish language is required

The IES Abroad Salamanca Center is in a modern building near the heart of the city. Whether you’re walking around the nearby Plaza Mayor or commuting between classes, the Center is your study abroad hub.

Housing
Homestay
Live with a Spanish family in your own private room and receive three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) 21 meals per week. Laundry is not included. This is the best option for students who wish to fully immerse themselves in Spanish culture. IES Abroad will do our best to accomodate your housing preference. The homestay option carries an additional fee.
Field Trips
Even though your adventure starts in Salamanca, our field trips take you beyond the city to discover the culture and traditions of your host country. All trips are included in the program fee unless otherwise noted with ($).
