On Being “Lucky” and being “Diligent”; Finding Community Abroad

I recently had a conversation with a friend about host families, roommates, and the concept of being “lucky.” This friend, who has recently been diagnosed with celiac disease, is spending the spring semester in another country, where they are navigating both a new language and new challenges to their health. 

“I am really lucky,” they said, “my host family is accommodating and kind. I could have landed anywhere, and I’ve landed somewhere welcoming and supportive.”

The IES Abroad orientation program is designed to ease you into life in Sydney, giving you guidance and support as you begin to adjust to your new surroundings. Attendance is compulsory. Entry Documents A visa is an official authorization affixed to your passport, which gives proof that you have the permission of the Australian government to enter Australia and study for the allotted time. Confirm your place in the program Submit the Confirmation Form by the deadline posted in your account. Obtain and check your passport Obtain a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the program end date, has two blank pages, and is signed on the appointed line. Confirm Your Spot & Understand Arrival Instructions Wait until you have officially confirmed your spot in the program and completely read arrival and departure information prior to booking your flights. Once you are confirmed, you will be responsible for booking your own travel. When booking flights, please keep in mind flight times and time differences. In many cases, you may need to depart the day before to arrive in your program host country on the official arrival date.
