Hope McClelland-Young is currently the Associate Vice President of College Relations and Advising at IES Abroad. Based in Portland, Oregon, Hope started as one of the first field-based College Relations Managers for the organization over 23 years ago. Hope’s first international memory was her family hosting a Japanese exchange student when she was four years old. In high school, she visited the Soviet Union and went on to study abroad in Heidelberg, Germany as an undergraduate International Studies/Political Science major. Prior to joining IES Abroad, Hope worked at Rice University supporting pre-professional and major scholarship advisors and then became its first full-time Study Abroad Advisor. When not at work, Hope likes to be in the kitchen creating something to share with her friends and family.

Jody Madler, Executive Director of Advancement, has been with  IES Abroad since 2017. In this role, she provides leadership and strategic vision for the charitable fundraising and alumni engagement work of IES Abroad.

Before coming to IES Abroad, Jody was the Director of Major Gifts for Midtown Educational Foundation (MEF), an afterschool and summertime academic enrichment and tutoring program for Chicago at-risk urban youth. During her 17-year tenure with MEF, Jody was responsible for all corporate, foundation, and major gift fundraising. During her final five years with MEF, Jody launched a spring benefit luncheon in collaboration with a women’s volunteer board, which grew to provide significant funding in support of MEF’s summer programs.

Jody holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from DePauw University. During her junior year at DePauw, she studied abroad in Strasbourg, France. Today, she serves in a volunteer leadership role at MEF through serving as a member of its Metro Achievement Council.

Megan Leff has been with IES Abroad since 1997 and currently serves as the Senior Associate Vice President for Academic Initiatives and Assessment, working in the Office of the Provost to develop and implement new initiatives and assess the overall quality of IES Abroad's programming. Over the years, she has served as program dean for IES Abroad's Centers in Paris, Tokyo, Nagoya, Siena, Melbourne and Rabat. In addition to program supervision, Megan was Secretary to IES Abroad's Academic Council for 13 years and currently serves as secretary to IES Abroad's Curriculum Committee. Megan completed a BA in French from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and spent her junior year abroad in a full immersion program in Aix-en-Provence. Shortly after graduating she interned in Paris and then pursued a Maîtrise de lettres modernes at the University of Grenoble, specializing in Francophone literature and the works of Calixthe Beyala. Megan is based out of her home office in Denver, CO and in her spare time loves exploring all that Colorado's mountains have to offer!

Michael Green has been with IES Abroad since 2002. As the Senior Associate Vice President for College Relations, he oversees a department of college relations managers and student advisors working to make sure that IES Abroad consortium schools’ faculty, staff and students are served well. Prior to working with IES Abroad, Michael worked for IIE in their San Francisco office. As an undergraduate at Albion College, he studied abroad for a year in Scotland at the University of Aberdeen. He holds a Master’s degree from Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, California.

Merel Frank has been with IES Abroad since 2000.  As Associate Vice President of Finance, he oversees the company-wide financial reporting, tax reporting, banking, accounting controls, and supports the accounting function for our global staff.  Prior to working with IES Abroad, Merel worked as Controller for an international consulting firm in a Chicago suburb.  He holds a B.S. in accounting from DePaul University and CPA certification.

Associate Vice President of Customized & Faculty-Led Programs

Lauren's rich background in international education, study abroad, and faculty-led programming serves as a foundation to inform the work she will be doing with IES Abroad. She has previously served as Deputy Director of the Office of International Programs at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to that position, she served for more than 11 years in positions of increasing responsibility at International Studies Abroad (ISA), including Associate Vice President, Custom Programs, and culminating in the position of Associate Vice President, University Partnerships.
 
Lauren received her Bachelor's of Arts degree from Rice University in English Literature and Spanish Language and Linguistics and her Master of Arts in Intercultural Communication from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She also spent a full academic year abroad at the Universitat de Barcelona, which included Catalan classes for international students. She credits her study abroad experiences as having an enormous positive impact, professionally and personally.

Executive Vice President for Strategy & Chief Operating Officer

Amber Mercier is the Vice President for Strategy, New Business Initiatives & Analytics. She first joined IES Abroad in 2003 as an advisor for study abroad students. By 2005, she transitioned to the role College Relations Manager, responsible for developing relationships with IES Abroad’s sending institutions.

In 2010, Amber joined the President’s Office as the organization’s first Chief of Staff, supporting the President and the Board of Directors in managing strategic issues. In this role, Amber designed and launched the Internship Programming (now IES Internships) division of IES Abroad. In 2015, she coordinated the affiliation and eventual merger between SAF and IES Abroad. In the years since, she has managed the incorporation of student recruitment efforts in China, Japan, and Korea into IES Abroad, and has overseen the launch of programming for international students at IES Abroad Centers.

Amber holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and International Relations from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from the University of Chicago.

Bill Martens, Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer, has been with IES Abroad since 1999. Bill has work in the accounting and finance field for more than twenty-five years.

Previously, he worked as a Finance Consultant with Ernst & Young in the health care and not-for-profit sectors. Past experiences also include work in corporate finance and corporate risk management with PaineWebber and A.G. Edwards where he served a broad range of clients.

Bill holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Bill Hoye is the Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and General Counsel at IES Abroad. He is responsible for overseeing global operations and is the organization’s chief legal officer. 

The departments in his reporting line include Human Resources, Student Affairs, IT, the Office of Budget Management, and global real estate. Bill is a recognized expert in higher education law and in legal and risk issues affecting international programs. He serves as Primary Chair of the IES Abroad Crisis Management Team and authored The IES Abroad MAP for Student Health, Safety and Crisis Management.

Prior to joining IES Abroad, Bill served as the Associate Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, and a Concurrent Associate Professor of Law at University of Notre Dame. He was Faculty Editor of The Journal of College and University Law for 22 years. Bill served as a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies at New College, Oxford University. Bill was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Forum on Education Abroad for 9 years. 

Bill holds a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from St. John’s University in Government, a Master of Laws Degree (LL.M), magna cum laude, in International Human Rights Law from Notre Dame, and a J.D. from Drake University. In 2016, the National Association of College and University Attorneys named Bill a Fellow of the Association.

IES Abroad Nice Interim Center Director

Dr. Amanda Swain joined IES Abroad in 2017, taking over as the Interim Center Director at the Nice Center in 2024. She has a strong background in curricular and faculty development and higher education management, in addition to over 10 years of undergraduate teaching experience. She was a 2016 Mellon Humanities Dissertation Fellow and the 2023 Romeyne Robert and Uguccione Sorbello Fellow. 

Dr. Swain holds a PhD in twentieth-century U.S. literature and culture from the Department of English at the University of Chicago. Her scholarship explores twentieth-century U.S. intellectual and political cultures, with an emphasis on their transatlantic dimensions. Her research has appeared in premier international journals, including American Quarterly, Modern Intellectual History, and Journal of Modern Italian Studies.
