Born and raised in Argentina, Juan (John) Hudson has extensive experience living and learning abroad. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, and he earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Prior to joining IES Abroad, Juan held senior academic and managerial roles in the study abroad field in Latin America. Juan has also served as the Director for the Graduate Marketing Program at the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa, as well as Director of the MBA Program at the Universidad de Palermo's Graduate School of Business in Buenos Aires. In Argentina, he has held numerous teaching appointments in the fields of international business and marketing, and he has served as a Visiting International Scholar at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Rich Bartecki is the Executive Vice President for Marketing and Institutional Relations at IES Abroad, where he directs global enrollment management, recruiting, advising, and marketing efforts.

Prior to joining IES Abroad, Rich served as Vice President of Marketing at the Chicago Botanic Garden, where he was responsible for advertising, public relations, online marketing, magazine and book publishing, and fundraising and development support. Rich also previously served at Ogilvy PR Worldwide as Senior Associate, Vice President, Senior Vice President, and Group Director, where he directed the Chicago office’s corporate practice and led the agency’s transportation, motorsports marketing groups, and new business initiatives. Prior to his tenure at Ogilvy, he served as Communications Manager at Duchossois Industries, Inc., a defense, transportation, consumer products, and entertainment company.

Rich has received more than two dozen local, regional, and national awards for marketing, advertising and public relations programming. Among the initiatives honored was a program for BP cited by PR Week magazine as one of the “Top 20 Public Relations Campaigns of All-Time”.

Barbara holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. degree in political science from the University of Mannheim in Germany. She also studied for a year at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore with a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD. Barbara conducted her Ph.D. research on the legitimacy of non-governmental organizations in global governance with a case study on women’s NGOs in the United Nations system. She has taught and published on civil society in global and European politics and on international relations theory. From 2007 to 2017, Barbara headed curricular affairs and admissions at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, a distinguished international graduate school that focuses on public policy and international affairs.

Michael Adewumi • Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Michael Adewumi is the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at IES Abroad. In this role, he provides leadership and oversight for all academic affairs at IES Abroad.

Before joining IES Abroad in January 2019, Michael served as the Vice Provost for Global Programs and the Senior International Officer at Penn State University, where he provided leadership and oversight for all Penn State’s international engagements. Prior to that, Michael was the Director of The Alliance for Education, Science, Engineering and Development in Africa (AESEDA) at the University. In 2007, Dr. Adewumi served as the inaugural UNESCO Chair in Georesources Management at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, a partnership initiative between UNESCO, Penn State University, University of Ibadan, and University of Cape Town. 

He was Professor of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at Penn State for more than three decades. Upon leaving Penn State, he was honored with the titles of Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Vice Provost. In 2008, Michael Adewumi was elected Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering. Michael also served on the Board of Directors of NAFSA from 2016-2019.

Dr. Adewumi holds a Bachelor’s of Science (1st Class Honors) degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Ibadan and Master’s and PhD degrees in Gas Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

Dr. Cèsar Alegre Alsina has been the Director of our Barcelona programs since 2008. He is originally from Barcelona and speaks Spanish, Catalan, and English fluently. He brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education to IES Abroad, including a noteworthy teaching career in the United States, experience in student services, and a strong research portfolio. Before coming to IES Abroad, Dr. Alegre Alsina taught Spanish language, as well as Spanish and Hispanic Culture and Literature at Amherst College for 16 years. He is the author of a book on Hispanic Americans (Scholastic), and has contributed to the Encyclopedia of Hispanic Americans (BRG Oxford) and numerous articles and reviews in American and international journals. Dr. Alegre Alsina received his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University, his Master’s degree in Hispanic Literature at Auburn University, and his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Chris McMillan • Auckland Program Manager

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Chris McMillan completed a PhD in Sociology at Massey University before to moving to London in 2010. While in London, Chris worked with study abroad students at Arcadia University and New York University’s London centers and developed a particular passion for experiential education and working with students.

Chris moved home to Auckland with his family in 2021 and was delighted to join IES Abroad. In addition to working with IES Abroad, Chris is an active teacher and researcher with a particular interest in cities and the sociology of sport.
