Study Abroad by Design® Program Spotlights
University of Notre Dame | Asset & Facilities Management + Energy in Auckland
The University of Notre Dame’s Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Science wanted to supplement the on-campus portion of its Introduction to Asset Management and Life-Cycle Resiliency course with an experiential international component. In collaboration with Notre Dame faculty, IES Abroad Customized & Faculty-Led Programs supported this program with housing, cultural events, field trips, and more.
Program Components
Term & Length: Summer, three weeks
Student Audience: Undergraduate students
Academic Focus: Infrastructure Asset Management
Courses Taught by: Notre Dame faculty member
Housing: Shared hostel
Field Trip: 2-day trip to Waiheke Island and a day trip to Rotorua
Highlight: In addition to engaging in learning on University of Auckland’s campus, students also experienced local culture and their subject matter in action out in the field.
Skidmore College | First-Year Experience
Skidmore College’s long-running study abroad program for first-year undergraduates allows students to start their collegiate career in London. Embracing the city of London as their classroom, participants jump start a lifetime of global experiences, learning, and perspectives, while being introduced to Skidmore’s academic rigor.
Program Components
Term & Length: Fall, semester
Student Audience: First-year undergraduate students
Academic Focus: Interdisciplinary Studies
Courses Taught by: Skidmore College and IES Abroad faculty
Housing: Residence hall
Field Trips: 3-day trip to Edinburgh and a day trip to Cambridge
Highlight: Running annually since 2006, this program provides study abroad access to first-year students, while offering the necessary level of support for students early on in their college career.
Stetson University College of Law | Law in Spain
Stetson University College of Law designed this study abroad program to prepare future lawyers to explore the influence and impact of the law as related to the administration and function of government and policymaking in an international setting.
Program Components
Term & Length: Summer, one month
Student Audience: Stetson and non-Stetson Graduate Law students
Academic Focus: International Law
Courses Taught by: Stetson University College of Law and visiting law faculty
Housing: Shared residence/hotel
Site Visits: Granada Supreme Court
Field Trips: 2-day trip to Gibraltar and Tangier, Morocco
Highlights: This program was unique in that four faculty members, from Stetson and other universities, each taught a weeklong course that provided students with different perspectives and shifting academic focus throughout the program.

IES Abroad Customized & Faculty-Led Programs believes in and wants to support and implement innovative study abroad program ideas.
