About the Program

Experience a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation by spending six-to-seven weeks in Seoul followed by the remainder of your semester in Tokyo. From Hongdae’s lively scene to Shibuya’s neon streets, this program offers an in-depth exploration of the forces shaping modern Korea and Japan. Understand the influences that shape the worlds of anime, manga, K-Pop, film, gaming, fashion, and food, guided by academic experts and insiders. With a mix of local insight and immersive experiences, gain a deeper understanding of how these cities continue to redefine popular culture and influence creativity worldwide.

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences. 
 
We offer unique courses that explore tradition and innovation in two of East Asia's cultural hubs through an in-depth and hands-on approach. World-class professors and course options enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.

Courses

Create your own academic experience by selecting from the following program components. You take 15-16 credits per semester. All IES Abroad courses are taught in English.

Seoul (6-7 weeks) 

  • Choose two English-taught area studies courses (required, 3 credits each)

  • AN 362 - Inside the Korean Wave: From K-Pop to Global Softpower
  • CM/IC 329 - Reading Korea: Literature, Language, and Society
  • CU/FH 220 - K-Style Lab: Korean Fashion, Beauty, and Design
  • HS/PO/SO 331 - Daily Life and Youth in Korea

Tokyo (9 weeks)

  • AS/HS 330 - Japan & Korea - History, Society and Popular Culture (required, 3 credits)
  • Choose two English-taught area studies courses (required, 3 credits each)

Eligibility Requirements

  • 18 years of age
  • In good standing at your home school
  • 2.75 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale (GPAs between 2.50 and 2.74 on a 4.0 scale will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Students with a GPA below 2.50 are ineligible).

     

About the IES Abroad Centers

The Centers are where our highly trained local staff provide on-the-ground support throughout your time abroad. 

Our Center staff will be there from the moment you arrive to answer any questions and help you adjust to your new surroundings.

 

 

Housing

Housing in Seoul and Tokyo

We will secure housing for you prior to your arrival in Seoul and Tokyo. We locate and contract housing for students every term that meets our high standards for health and safety while simultaneously increasing student understanding of the local culture. Housing options provided vary by term and location but may include hotel, residence hall, and/or apartment housing. 

We recognize how important housing is to students and their families, and we aim to provide all the information needed to ensure confidence and clarity before arrival.

Field Trips

Even though your adventure starts in Tokyo and Seoul, our field trips take you beyond the city to discover the culture and traditions of your host country. All trips are included in the program fee unless otherwise noted with ($).

NOTE: IES Abroad field trip destinations, activities, and lengths of stay may vary according to term and availability.

DMZ: Orientation

1 Day Fall & Spring

One-day trip to the Korean Demilitarized Zone where you will feel and experience the peace and tension between two Koreas.

Tokyo City Tour 

1 Day Fall & Spring

From exploring Sensoji, one of the city’s most popular temples, to encountering the contemporary areas such as Odaiba and the Tokyo Tower, there is much to experience in this metropolis. Come discover the traditional and modern parts of Tokyo.

Bulguksa Gyeongju

Gyeongju

2 days Spring

Explore Gyeongju, known as the “museum without walls,” to discover ancient Korean culture and history. Visit Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto.

Nikko

2 Days Fall

Visit the spectacular Shinto Shrine, Nikko Tosho-gu, experience a Japanese ryokan with hot springs, and view some of the country’s beautiful mountain scenery.

Orientation

Start at Home
Prepare for arrival in Japan with our virtual orientation program where you will meet the IES Abroad Center staff, fellow students, and get to know the city.
Arrive in Tokyo
Orientation continues upon arrival. Participate in mandatory orientation sessions with additional academic and student life information to enhance your success abroad.
Get to Know the City
Beyond orientation sessions, you will have opportunities to explore and discover Tokyo before classes start to help you feel at home in your new environment.
Prepare to Learn
Feel prepared to begin classes with practical lessons, activities designed to help you learn your way around the area, and support from our dedicated student volunteers.
Settle In
Orientation continues throughout the semester with field trips allowing you to both further sample elements of Japanese culture and get to know the other students.

Our Chicago-based and on-site staff are all highly trained and experienced in the matters of health, safety, and crisis management.
