Easter Break (Part 1): Munich to My Ears

Last week my friend and I decided to take advantage of the break we had before classes started, so we decided to take a journey through Munich, Ljubljana (Slovenia), Vienna, Budapest, and Nuremberg. It was a week filled with mistakes and successes, cheap food and valuable experiences, and lots and lots of laughter. It does not matter how old, well-traveled, or intelligent a person is: anyone going on an 11-day journey through four different countries is bound to run into a few problems.

First Trip to Northern Ireland

Last week my dad visited me from Cleveland and we went on a whirlwind tour of Northern Ireland and some places in the north of the Republic of Ireland. Highlights included climbing Knocknarea Mountain in Sligo, Ireland and seeing the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. All in all we travelled several hundred miles around Ireland and had an incredible trip. It was really amazing after three months to get to see my dad and to show him my adoptive country. Below are some of my favorite photos from the trip!

Internship

I am taking the internship class here and I highly recommend it. I would describe is as an independent study with class meetings to share and discuss progress in each company. I was very excited to see that IES sets everyone up with something that interests them. There are people working in sports, politics, art, and other intriguing areas. I am working in the city at a gallery. The name of the Gallery is Galeria Gabriela Mistral. She is a very famous writer and poet from Chile. There are many museums, galleries, and streets named after her.

Gearing Up For the Long Haul

By now, I'm sure you've heard about the dreaded 20-hour plane flight across the country, or the overnight ferry spanning 24 hours to some far away island. When it comes to traveling the world, people conquer intensive travel itineraries to explore destinations unknown on a feasible budget. While I would consider myself an avid traveler, my travel limits were tested during my recent ten-day trip to Greece.

Is That Real Greek Yoghurt?

As many of you may be aware, the Greek yoghurt fad has spread across the United States like rapid fire over the past few years. Brands such as Chobani, Faye, and even Dannon have cashed in on this growing trend in food retail. But as recent reports have shown, these brands have been using GMOs and artificial sweeteners in their products, turning what was once seen as a healthy choice of yoghurt into a potentially harmful one. I stopped eating Greek yoghurt when this news came out about a year ago, and it was a very sad day indeed.

Sacromonte at Dusk

There is a certain slant of golden light that peeks into my windowpane. Like a path of honey that leads into the old center of the city, gripping my feet and propelling me forward as a bee would follow the scent of a flower. There is a certain slant of golden light that pools on the hills behind Sacromonte and spills into the cuevas tucked into the mountain. It outlines the faces of young people sitting in the grass and in the flowers. Tickles the new budding plants, bending with the weight of the coming summer days.

Budapest!

After the Ten Day Trip I took a weekend off before heading off on the next adventure: my first weekend trip! My friend Lisa and I were both looking forward to visiting Budapest, so we knew that HAD to be our first destination. Since our only class on Fridays is morning German, we left Friday afternoon.

The Art of Conversation

If there's one piece of advice I could give anyone studying abroad in France it would be to take day trips! France has a 'covoiturage' system where drivers share their vehicles in order to take people from place to place. It's comparable to Uber, but can be used for much longer distances.
