IES Abroad Paris Students Explore Clichy-Batignolles, the City’s Growing Eco-District

When our students study sustainability, we know it’s not enough to simply discuss hypothetical strategies. That’s why our world-class instructors, such as Dr. Alvaro Artigas, take their lectures to the streets to see eco-conscious innovation in action.

For their Green Growth, Sustainability, and the New Economy course, students on our Paris – Business & International Affairs Program recently set out on a course-related trip to Clichy-Batignolles, a dynamically growing eco-district in Paris. Launched in 2002 by the City of Paris, the district addresses clean energy, biodiversity, transportation, and social diversity goals for its community. Dr. Artigas showed his students how the eco-district is meeting these goals through innovative construction, green spaces, and community resources.

Sustainable Construction & Gender Equality

The students began their tour in Martin Luther King Park, a 25-acre park that is lined with LEED and EDGE certified buildings. LEED certifications evaluate the environmental performance of a building, while EDGE certifications assess businesses on gender equality. Looking at the different building designs, the students got a grasp of current sustainable construction trends in Europe.

Urban Farming

Next, Dr. Artigas brought the students to an urban farm. Students learned how the community uses this space and how other local crops are grown throughout the region.

Drinking Water

The district has a free sparkling water dispenser for residents and visitors, a unique feature of this area in agreement with Paris public utility Eau de Paris.

Vegetation Strategies

Besides its large public park, the eco-district strategically uses greenery throughout the neighborhood. Students examined collective gardens and green walls and their impact in lowering temperatures in the fight against climate change.
