Why Studying Abroad Is the Answer! (and How To Prepare)

If you’re considering studying abroad, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and a whole lot of nerves. That's exactly where I was a few months ago before I committed to my study abroad program with IES Abroad. I was torn between the desire to embark on a new adventure and the immense uncertainty about the journey ahead. As someone who has yet to set off on their study abroad journey, I don’t have all of the answers. But here's my advice: if you have the opportunity to study abroad, take it.

It’s okay not to feel 100% ready

If I’m being honest with myself, every day is a rollercoaster of emotions leading up to study abroad. I spent hours searching through the IES Abroad website trying to decide which program would suit me best. I realized that there was no one-size-fits-all answer. I didn’t need to find the “perfect” place or  to feel completely ready to go. I just needed to trust myself and be open to whatever study abroad would bring me. As I prepare to depart for Amsterdam, I have come to realize that all of these emotions are simply part of the process. I am learning to let go of wanting to have everything figured out in advance and enjoy the present moment. If you’re waiting for everything to feel 100% right, you may miss your opportunity to study abroad. My recommendation is to just apply!

Do your research and ask all the questions

Researching your study abroad location and program can help ease your nerves tremendously. I liked scrolling through TikTok to hear from other students who have already studied abroad in Amsterdam. This helped me learn about the culture, how to pack, and what to expect while abroad! On top of that, I talked to past students, program advisors, and literally anyone who has studied abroad to ask any and all questions I had.

Romanticize the experience, but also be realistic

Of course, I’m already daydreaming about the bike rides, visiting museums, going to classes in a new country, and weekend trips, but I am also preparing to deal with cultural differences, homesickness, and making new friends abroad. You should expect the unexpected and embrace it. Living in a new country will force you to step outside of your comfort zone by trying new foods, embracing a new language, and doing academics in an unfamiliar environment. While it may seem stressful, there are also so many rewards that come along with studying abroad.

At the end of the day, the preparation for study abroad may feel overwhelming at times, but it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you’re still on the fence, take a step back and think about why YOU want to study abroad. Whatever your reasons are, hold onto them and don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the logistics and fears of studying abroad. You’ll be able to see the world from a new perspective and grow in ways you would have never imagined. If you’re even a little bit curious, go for it.
