Like so many IES Abroad alumni, study abroad was a life changing experience for Jean Shanks, Vienna 70-71. Jean graduated from Simmons University in Boston where she majored in English. A Vienna classmate introduced her to her future husband and they raised their family in Birmingham, Alabama, where Jean worked at the Birmingham Public Library. Jean's class is particularly close and she has enjoyed reconnecting with her Vienna classmates and attending class reunions.

Eligibility: 

  • Applicants must be accepted to and attend an IES Abroad standard program (preference for Vienna) in the fall, spring, academic year, or calendar year
  • Applicants must be undergraduates in good standing at an accredited U.S. college or university
  • Applicants must have documented financial need
  • Include a personal statement detailing the following:
    A personal statement (500 words) detailing your commitment to peace, human rights, civil liberties, social betterment, or environmental protection through volunteer activities or publications. Please include excerpts of any publications.
