EC/PO 325 - Chinese Economy and Politics: Transition and Development

China’s post-Maoist economy has gained rapid growth since 1978 when it embarked on economic reforms and opening up policies. This course is intended to offer an informed perspective into the evolving process of economic transition and development in the past three decades. We will analyze Chinese economy from both micro- and macro-economic approaches, combining theoretical and empirical studies. We will also pay attention to selected economic sectors and industries that have displayed dramatic changes in both structures and performances, such as the oil and gasoline, automobile, telecommunications. Throughout the detailed case and industry studies, we will illustrate different forms of how competition was/is introduced into the formerly state economy and predict what will happen in those and relevant industries.
