Porta Portese: A Thrifters Paradise

On one of my first weekends here in Rome, my roommate invited me to come to a market in Trastevere. I immediately pictured your typical farmers market, a street or two of vendors selling fresh fruit, honey, and pastries. When we arrived at Porta Portese early that Sunday morning I was surprised to find a very different kind of market. There was a seemingly endless street packed with vendors selling everything from makeup to shoes to home supplies. Best of all were piles and piles of clothes for as little as 1 euro. It was heaven on earth.

What Your Study Abroad Preparation WON'T Prepare You For

Prior to leaving my home university, I sat in hours of study abroad preparation classes, events, and workshops. I pumped my brain full of all the crucial information I would need in this experience ridden with change. What to expect with culture shock, how to stay healthy while abroad, and how to push through language anxieties were all things I was ready to face. What completely caught me off-guard, however, was study abroad fatigue…and having it hit me by surprise almost left me down for the count.

The Study Abroad Dilemma: Homestay vs. Apartment

Studying abroad is a transformative experience, offering a unique blend of academic growth, cultural immersion, and personal development. One of the most critical decisions you'll make when preparing for your overseas adventure is choosing your accommodation. The choice between a homestay and an apartment is a dilemma that many international students face, and it ultimately boils down to personal preferences and priorities.

A Taste of Argentina: Asado at a local friend’s house

There's something magical about sharing a meal that transcends cultural boundaries and creates bonds among people. Such was the case when our Argentinian friends invited us to their house for the Argentinian tradition known as "asado." This culinary adventure not only allowed me to try the best meat ever in Argentina, but also made me realize the importance of asado in forming a sense of community and strong friendships.

For many IES Abroad students in Italy, enrolling in courses at Italian universities is an important part of the study abroad experience. If you are proficient in Italian, have the necessary prerequisites and wish to experience Italian university life, you may consider enrolling in one or more courses outside of IES Abroad. In planning your courses, you must take the responsibility for creating a class schedule without conflicts in meeting times. It is possible to explore a small number of courses until you decide which ones you wish to continue. Once you have registered, however, you are...

All students must arrive in Rome by 5:30pm on the official arrival date. Rome is served by two airports. You will likely arrive at the main one, Fiumicino/Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO), which is used by most carriers and for nearly all intercontinental flights. The second one, Roma Ciampino Airport (CIA), is mainly served by intra-European and low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and EasyJet. Arriving via FCO Airport If you arrive at FCO airport between 8:30am and 5:30pm, you will be greeted by an IES Abroad staff member holding an IES Abroad sign in the arrivals area (after exiting the baggage...
