3 Ways to Learn Outside the Classroom on Study Abroad Shanghai

Studying abroad in Shanghai is all about living and learning (and having fun!) abroad in one of China’s largest and most developed cities. This past semester, our students studying abroad in Shanghai have participated in a number of unique activities that have taken their learning beyond the classroom and made Shanghai feel like home.

Visit Famous Landmarks on Course-Related Trips

From the Oriental Pearl Tower to the Bund across the Huangpu River, there is no shortage of historical monuments to explore while studying abroad in Shanghai. When you study abroad with IES Abroad, you visit must-see landmarks as part of your courses.

This spring, our Shanghai students visited the China Pavilion as part of their courses Chinese Language in Context: Novice Abroad I, Chinese Language in Context: Novice Abroad Iii, and Chinese Language in Context: Emerging Independent Abroad I. The China Pavilion was the largest national pavilion at the Shanghai 2010 World Expo and housed exhibits showcasing China’s civilization, modern development, and more. Now an art museum, the Pavilion allows students to explore China’s history, culture, architecture, and more outside of the classroom.

Become Involved in the Local Community

One of the best parts of studying abroad is immersing yourself in the community by volunteering your time at local organizations. It’s an opportunity to give back and have a good time. Just take it from our study abroad Shanghai students who spent an activity-packed afternoon with young students at a local primary school.

Spend Time with New International Friends

While studying abroad in Shanghai, you meet people from all over the world and create memories together that will last a lifetime. Think: exploring various neighborhoods, trying a new restaurant, or even organizing a picnic at a local park. Students studying abroad in Shanghai this semester did just that as they gathered for a weekend barbecue at Cherry Blossom Park to enjoy the springtime weather, take in the cherry blossom trees in full bloom, and share delicious food.
