This past week, I spent half the day in Toledo, Spain. The train ride from Madrid was less than an hour. When I first arrived, even the train station was beautiful. I loved all the stained glass and pretty architecture. I walked for about 25-minutes to get to the city center. On my way, I walked through the Alcazar, up so many stairs, and saw some great city views. My first stop was the mosque. It was a lot smaller than I expected, but still pretty. Next, I went to the cathedral. This was my favorite stop of the day. There was stained glass everywhere, a lot of gold decor, and a small museum attached. It was freezing in the church, but the building was gorgeous and full of history. My next stop was the Church of San Tomé, where I saw “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz” by El Greco. I had been learning about this painting in my art history class, so it was great to see it in person. Right nearby was the Santo Tomé bakery - the oldest bakery with marzipan. Marzipan is a popular thing in Toledo, and I really liked it! I walked around the cute little streets for a while, window shopping among all the silver and gold stores (also very popular in Toledo). My last stops were the Jewish quarter and the synagogue. The arches were very tall, simple, and bright white. It was a pretty small synagogue, but very pretty, nonetheless. The Jewish quarter was very calm, and there was a park overlooking the city, as well. On my way back to the train station, I walked through the busy city center, where there were many shops and restaurants. My train ride home was even quicker - so easy to take a day trip from Madrid!
