Recently, I visited Morocco for the first time. This was my first time visiting the continent of Africa! It was very different than anywhere I had been in Europe. Not only were the language and currency different, but the way of life, the customs, the foods, and the scenery were all very unique. I was with a group of 10 friends, and we went on a 3-day desert tour to the Merzouga Desert. Our first day was a lot of driving with stops along the way. We stopped in small towns and villages where locals gave us tours, told us stories, and gave us a glimpse of daily life. My favorite stop was learning about argan oil and the process from seed to final product. The women working at the shop showed us how to crack the seeds, mill them to get oil (some parts edible, other parts not), and how to use the oil for its properties (healthy skin, hair growth, etc.). We also got to taste the final argan oil with fresh bread!
Once in the Sahara Desert, we traveled by camel to our campsite. This was an amazing experience, although I did feel bad for the camels. It was so cool to meander through the sand dunes this way, and the sites were incredible. Getting up and down from the camel’s back was a bit scary, especially since we were given no instructions. But once we were on, it was a very calm ride, although slightly uncomfortable towards the end of the hour. We also got to sandboard once we arrived at our campsite. The sun was setting during this time, and later, the most beautiful stars appeared. We ate traditional Moroccan food, including chicken kebabs, couscous, and chicken tagine. It was all very authentic and super delicious. Overall, I would highly recommend visiting Morocco and traveling to the desert!
