Lisbon and Porto, Portugal

Famous street in Lisbon

This past weekend in Portugal was incredible. The weather was absolutely perfect, the architecture was so beautiful, and the food was delicious.

We flew into Lisbon and spent two days there. Since my friend and I love sweets, we had to try the famous Pastel de Nata, of course. The most famous place to get these is Manteigaria. We probably ate 10 of these little pastries throughout the weekend. They are made of a puff pastry crust filled with egg custard. So simple but so delicious. Traditionally, cinnamon is sprinkled on top, as well.

Our first day was spent in the new town, where we walked around the cute little streets, went down by the coast, did some shopping, etc. There is a big plaza down by the water with tons of ceramic architecture, which I really enjoyed. We saw Pink Street and Green Street, too, which were very cute.

On our second day, we ventured to Alfama - the old town. This is the only part of Lisbon that remained after the big earthquakes. Much of Alfama is only accessible on foot because the streets are too narrow for cars. We started at the top of the hill, where we had an amazing view of the city. Slowly, we made our way down through the town, stopping at the giant Saturday flea market, a very cool castle, and a church.

On Sunday, we took the train to Porto for the day. Porto has a huge river running through the city, and some really cool architecture as well. We visited the Church of Souls, which has amazing blue tile decor on the outside. For sunset, we went to Jardim de Moro hill. Tons of locals and tourists camp out to watch the sunset over the river. There was live music, lots of socializing, and the best view of the city!
