HS 340 - History of London: London and the Monarchy from 1066-Present

This course will introduce students to that most famous of institutions, the Monarchy. It will provide an overview of how the Monarchy has evolved, often through very tumultuous times, outlining the changing role and function of the monarchy within our society. Using London as a resource, the life of the Royals from 1066 to the present day will be examined through course-related trips to renowned locations and classroom-based lectures. The course will introduce students to concepts such as absolutism and constitutional monarchy, the privy council, Royal prerogative, Royal Assent and the Royal Brand, while exploring ways in which these have historically shaped – and continue to shape – London, the wider country and indeed the world.

Please note: This course is pending review by our Curriculum Committee and there may be some small changes to the syllabus.
