All IES Abroad Centers are equipped with a Wi-Fi connection. You may connect your laptop, cell phone, and other WiFi-enabled devices during office hours. To access internet outside of IES Abroad Center hours, you may choose to visit local cafes where internet access is available, university libraries (depending on your enrollment), your housing accommodation, and other WiFi hotspots throughout the city. Be sure to check with your cellular provider to ensure that you may access the Internet on your phone when connected to WiFi without incurring mobile data costs. You'll probably want to set...
Shipping & Storing Luggage Because there is a customs fee that needs to be paid upon arrival, our Center cannot accept any shipped luggage. To avoid your things getting stuck in a shipping snafu, don’t ship anything to the Center ahead of time! Similarly, the IES Abroad Center is not available to store luggage before, during, or after your program. To ensure your items are kept safe, we recommend finding alternative options in your local city.
Late Arrival Late arrivals are not permitted unless warranted by a documented medical or family emergency and approved by IES Abroad. If your flights are delayed or canceled before you arrive in your host country, use the information provided in the Print Me document (emailed 2-3 weeks before your program begins) to contact us. Our staff will communicate the details of your delayed arrival to the on site Center staff.
Wait to Make Independent Travel Plans As soon as a preliminary program calendar is available (typically 6-8 weeks before the program starts), it will appear below. However, this calendar is subject to change. Please do not make independent travel arrangements (including visits from family or friends) before you arrive on-site, receive any calendar updates from the IES Abroad Center staff during orientation, and finalize your course registration. Remember that you will not be excused from academic obligations, including final exams or required IES Abroad events, in order to travel independently...

A Night and Day in Galway

Let me lay out the scene. It's almost my second weekend here and I have no clue what to do with it. Especially since it was a long weekend due to the bank holiday, a few friends and I decided to go to Galway for the weekend. We book our hostel, bus tickets, and a bus tour to the Cliffs of Moher and the Wild Atlantic Way. We wake up way too early on a Saturday morning and amble to Temple Bar to catch the CityLink (they are awesome, would recommend) and head to Galway.

The Short and Sustainable History of Freiburg

Last semester, I was in the Environmental Studies program with IES Abroad Freiburg. This meant that I got to learn a lot about green policies in Freiburg and its history. I think stories like these can feel reassuring, especially during a time where it feels like the climate crisis is getting worse every day and no one is doing anything to stop it. So here’s how Freiburg went from being a car-ridden city, to the walkable, green city you know and love today!

Balancing self-fulfilling prophecy and spontaneity: The stories we choose to tell ourselves

Throughout my year abroad, a few glimpses have appeared in my imagination of what this moment might feel like—the moment where I lay in my bed at home and write my final reflections on what has been the most incredible adventure of my life. I certainly predicted correctly that this juncture would feel overwhelming, trying to encapsulate my experiences and provide some wisdom from all the lessons I have learned. It’s hard to know exactly where to start, since in a way this chapter is all part of the same journey of life that is continuously changing.

Homestays are offered in private homes in Buenos Aires. In some cases a family may host more than one IES Abroad student in their home. All homestays are secured by the IES Abroad staff, located in safe areas of the city, and inspected on a regular basis. Just as “family” could mean many different things in your home country, Argentine families also are quite diverse. While some families might resemble the classic "nuclear family" structure, others may represent a myriad of different make ups and could consists of any array of family and extended family members, so you'll want to be prepared...
