On Being 'Lucky' or 'Diligent'; Finding Community Abroad

I recently had a conversation with a friend about host families, roommates, and the concept of being “lucky.” This friend, who has recently been diagnosed with celiac disease, is spending the spring semester in another country, where they are navigating both a new language and new challenges to their health. 

“I am really lucky,” they said, “my host family is accommodating and kind. I could have landed anywhere, and I’ve landed somewhere welcoming and supportive.”

Entry Documents A visa is an official authorization affixed to your passport, which gives proof that you have the permission of the Australian government to enter Australia and study for the allotted time. Confirm your place in the program Submit the Confirmation Form by the deadline posted in your account. Obtain and check your passport Obtain a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the program end date, has two blank pages, and is signed on the appointed line. Confirm Your Spot & Understand Arrival Instructions Wait until you have officially confirmed your spot in the program and completely read arrival and departure information prior to booking your flights. Once you are confirmed, you will be responsible for booking your own travel. When booking flights, please keep in mind flight times and time differences. Early Departure Policy It is not possible to reschedule a final exam or final paper deadline in order to accommodate early departure for personal travel, including plans to attend events such as a friend or relative's wedding, a family reunion, or a graduation ceremony. Plan ahead and make sure our program dates do not conflict with your personal plans before you confirm your place in the program.
Summer in Dublin is generally pleasant, with average highs reaching a comfortable 18-20°C. However, the Irish climate is known for its unpredictability, so expect occasional rain showers and pack layers. Pack a light rain jacket or small umbrella, comfortable walking shoes, and clothes that can be easily combined for adaptability. Don't forget sunglasses – even with some cloud cover, there can be bright sunshine! You will find that casual campus clothing is quite acceptable in Dublin, although we recommend wearing jeans rather than sweatpants.
