Why the University of Auckland?: a Prospective

With an extra-long lunch break because of a cancelled seminar — and, most importantly, the promise of pizza — I impulsively decided to attend an IES Abroad session. Anything was better than the abysmal dining options at my university; and maybe I would fall in love with one of the programs along the way. The posterboard in my dorm’s lobby displayed a wide array of countries and institutions: Korea, Argentina, Switzerland. The only meeting time left was for the University of Auckland’s direct enrollment program.

Preparing for Departure

I’m so excited to be studying abroad in Freiburg this fall! My name is Rosalie and I’m at an interesting part in my journey of studying abroad: I’ve gotten into my program and now I have only a month left to prepare for my trip. I wish I could tell you every day I’m devoting three hours to my packing lists, German practice, and already making best friends in Germany, but unfortunately, I don’t even know if I’m bringing a suitcase or a trunk.

Baker’s Chocolate before Departure

I recently read an essay by a friend, who is nearing the end of her year as a Fulbright English teaching assistant in the Balkans. In it, she articulates, in vivid, lyrical prose, the bittersweetness of leaving the home she’s created for herself in a year to the one she occupied the first two decades of her life. At risk of spoiling her writing, I will summarize it with the following metaphor: departure, the essay points out, is more akin to the chalk-like baker’s chocolate we melt on a skillet for rich, flourless cake.
