Recap: My Favorite Moments Abroad

The weekend trip I, along with about 10 other people from the IES Metropolitan Studies group, took to Dresden in September will always be one of my fondest memories of my time abroad. I got my first taste of the Germany that exists outside of Berlin, along with the opportunity to bond with my (then) new classmates and some of the IES staff. This weekend holds too many fond memories to be contained in a simple blog post.

Before the weather became frigid, I spent many mornings and afternoons going on runs through the Tiergartens. Having the ability to escape to a serene place of nature in the midst of a bustling city allowed me the time to reflect on my new surroundings, and enjoy some time to myself.

The last trip I was able to take was to Barcelona. This photo was taken from Park Güell, which offered stunning views of the entire city and the ocean in the distance.

As I've mentioned numerous times before, Berlin became another home to me. During my time there, I enjoyed the moments when I'd be walking through the city, and something new and striking would catch my eye. I love the opportunities for adventure and exploration that living in a new city bring.

Despite the fact that climbing to the top of the towers at Notre Dame took me high above the city, I'm not sure I've ever seen as much detail in a metropolitan landscape as I did when I got to view Paris while standing next to the gargoyles.

The Neva Rive is vast, intimidating, yet incredibly beautiful--much like St. Petersburg as a whole. My week spent in Russia was challenging, surprising, and without a doubt, one of my favorite trips.

Christmas markets! During this last month in Germany (although this picture was taken at the first Christmas market I had the pleasure of experiencing, in Hungary) the smell of glühwein has filled the air! While I love ALL markets, the Christmas markets definitely have a special charm to them. I loved seeing the various foods carefully prepared, hearing old friends jovially chat, and perusing the hand-crafts.

It's easy to become infatuated with the street art in Berlin. Searching for new, intricate graphics on the sides of buildings was nearly a game for me, during my time there. While some might consider street-art to be "low" art, I personally think it adds character and a unique edge to Berlin.

The people you meet during an experience as unique as "Study Abroad" can have a huge impact on the outcome. I met some fantastic, crazy, kind, eclectic, and generally wonderful people during my time in Berlin. They made me laugh, challenged me in ways I never expected, and showed me unknown amounts of kindness. I will be forever grateful to many of them.
