A Night and Day in Galway

Let me lay out the scene. It's almost my second weekend here and I have no clue what to do with it. Especially since it was a long weekend due to the bank holiday, a few friends and I decided to go to Galway for the weekend. We book our hostel, bus tickets, and a bus tour to the Cliffs of Moher and the Wild Atlantic Way. We wake up way too early on a Saturday morning and amble to Temple Bar to catch the CityLink (they are awesome, would recommend) and head to Galway.

The Short and Sustainable History of Freiburg

Last semester, I was in the Environmental Studies program with IES Abroad Freiburg. This meant that I got to learn a lot about green policies in Freiburg and its history. I think stories like these can feel reassuring, especially during a time where it feels like the climate crisis is getting worse every day and no one is doing anything to stop it. So here’s how Freiburg went from being a car-ridden city, to the walkable, green city you know and love today!

Balancing self-fulfilling prophecy and spontaneity: The stories we choose to tell ourselves

Throughout my year abroad, a few glimpses have appeared in my imagination of what this moment might feel like—the moment where I lay in my bed at home and write my final reflections on what has been the most incredible adventure of my life. I certainly predicted correctly that this juncture would feel overwhelming, trying to encapsulate my experiences and provide some wisdom from all the lessons I have learned. It’s hard to know exactly where to start, since in a way this chapter is all part of the same journey of life that is continuously changing.

Homestays are offered in private homes in Buenos Aires. In some cases a family may host more than one IES Abroad student in their home. All homestays are secured by the IES Abroad staff, located in safe areas of the city, and inspected on a regular basis. Just as “family” could mean many different things in your home country, Argentine families also are quite diverse. While some families might resemble the classic "nuclear family" structure, others may represent a myriad of different make ups and could consists of any array of family and extended family members, so you'll want to be prepared...

Two Weeks After Berlin - Adjusting to Home

I won’t sugarcoat it: leaving Berlin was hard. Saying goodbye to my host family, friends, IES Abroad staff, and even favorite restaurants is no easy task, and saying goodbye to the life and routine I created for myself was just as hard, if not harder. In these past few weeks, I’ve moved back home to Maryland and then back to my college town in Michigan for the summer. Seeing friends and family from home has been wonderful, but I can’t help but think of my time in Berlin and feel like—as I reacclimate to my life at home in the United States—those four months abroad were a fever dream.
