Preparing For Study Abroad: Here We Go!

My preparations for the upcoming semester are very different than most of my friends staying in the US and even my friends going abroad because I have an autoimmune disease called Primary Immunodeficiency Disease (PIDD). This means that on top of organizing my visa, picking classes, and applying for housing, I am also communicating with my doctors and the IES Abroad staff to develop a plan for my medical care and medications. At first, all of this felt very overwhelming and serious, but I soon learned that with the help of the IES Abroad staff, it was all very doable.

Arrivederci, Los Angeles! Ciao, Roma!

After several months of waiting, I am set to leave Los Angeles on Sunday to begin my study abroad experience. As I look to the fall with eagerness, anticipation, and excitement for what my study abroad semester in Rome will bring, I am counting down my remaining shifts at work and saying goodbye to dear friends before I embark on an incredible journey. It is a dynamic institution, offering diverse opportunities that attract the highest number of exchange students from universities all over...

Hola! Mucho Gusto!

I've been mentally drafting this post countless times this Summer, but this is not entirely surprising, considering my knack for overthinking. My thoughts often wander, circling the persistent question: "Am I making the right choices?" Initially, I meant to focus this post on my journey in language learning, the chaos of packing and academic preparations, course planning, and registration. However, as I sit down to rewrite this on the eve of my departure, it's crucial to capture the whirlwind of emotions that accompany it.

The Importance Of Beginning Something New

In Indonesia, there is a small community of people called the Toraja people. This community is known for a variety of things, but most notably known for living with the dead. They do not bury their dead relatives, instead, they set up their bodies in their homes and dress them. Most people do not even know that these people exist. In fact, when they hear about this spiritual practice that takes place in this community, many people will become appalled as this is not a “normal” practice that happens in many places.
