Holiday Availability: All IES Abroad offices will be closed on Dec 24, Dec 25, Dec 31, and Jan 1 as we take some time to celebrate. During the weeks of 12/22 and 12/29, our team will be smaller, so responses may take longer than usual. Thanks for your understanding—and happy holidays!
What I Wished I Packed for Chile
Instead of the usual packing list of what to pack for Chile, here is what I wish I had packed:
Warmer clothes:
Filmtheater Kriterion: The Preferred Café of Amsterdam's Coolest Students
Earlier in the semester, I wrote about my favorite café, Checkpoint Charlie, an old punk spot with good music, cheap drinks, and a library full of interesting books. However, since I wrote about Checkpoint Charlie, another café has become my new go-to, especially now that my work has ramped up and I find myself studying more than anything else. The café in question is also a movie theater, located right on the University of Amsterdam’s Roeterseiland campus, which houses the schools of Economics and Business as well as Social and Behavioral Science.
GSA Schedule—What I Wish I Knew!
This week, I returned home to Vermont. I'm already so bummed. So while I'm still working to gather my thoughts into a reflection post, I am digging through older blog posts which I have yet to publish. In this post, originally drafted in November, I go through the Gaiety School Schedule. I found when I was applying that it was very difficult to find a student's perspective on the program, so hopefully this will be handy to any prospective students! This is part 1 of at least 2 posts on all the things I wish someone told me before class. <3
Making My Way Through the Santiago Subway Crowds
The Santiago bus and train system is quite impressive. Compared to the metro system in Washington D.C. that I’m most accustomed to, the Santiago public transportation is cheaper, more efficient, and extensive. The public transportation consists of the metro (train) and micros (buses). I have found the buses to be less consistent, but this is only normal for buses that endure road traffic. However, there are some dedicated bus lanes in Chile, so the buses move somewhat faster than the cars during rush hour.
Carolina Weatherall
I like telling stories and writing long-winded essays about my cultural observations. I generally wind up where there are books, or people talking about them, or—better yet—people celebrating queer, feminist or minoritized voices in twenty-first literature.
Solo Travel: Embracing the Adventure
Traveling alone is a life-changing experience that is more than just a trip; it's a journey of self-discovery and globe exploration. My exploration of the world of solo travel led me to realize that careful planning is not only a useful requirement but also a blank canvas on which spontaneity can paint its vibrant picture.
Salamanca: A Cultural Studying Experience
Studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain, has been a wonderful experience which is why it is fantastic opportunity that captivates students with a multitude of benefits and unique experiences, making it a top choice for a learning and cultural journey. Salamanca's historical and cultural grandeur are major contributing factors to its appeal. The city has amazing architecture, historic buildings, and an old town that is recognized by UNESCO, all of which clearly reflect its rich history.
