Movies From my Irish Film Class!

When we were initially picking classes and forming our schedules in the first week of study abroad, I decided to audit a class on Irish film—I didn’t have to do any assignments, but I could show up to class, take part in discussions, and, best of all, watch movies! I really love movies and I think film plays a huge part in shaping our understanding of themes of history, the present, the future, various communities, etc.—how life is depicted in movies matters a lot.

Gyms You will receive more information about gym locations and memberships during orientation. Gyms are generally more expensive and they might require you to pass an on-site physical to gain access to the facilities. The IES Abroad staff can suggest when and where to buy tickets for different events.

My Study Abroad Playlist

I returned from study abroad on December 17th, a blur of a day that I’ll describe more in another blog post to come. Needless to say, I’m still gathering the words, and I’ve always felt that music is a great way to voice the indescribable. I got “the Alchemist” on my Spotify Wrapped, which makes a ton of sense, as I love making playlists for certain moods and time periods, and naturally, I made one for my experience in Dublin. Here are some of the highlights!

Italian electricity operates at 220 volts, which means you will need to purchase a voltage converter and an adapter in order to use major electrical appliances you bring from home. It is best to keep appliances to a minimum. You may want to consider purchasing a hair dryer in Europe; you will find it easier to use without having to use the adapter and you will be able to pack it on future European trips. For other appliances, such as chargers for electronic devices, you will need plug adapters to plug dual-voltage appliances into wall outlets. We urge you to conduct some research on adapters...

Homesickness: Finding Comfort Away

Studying abroad leaves many of us not returning to the States until our program is done, being away from our friends and family for months. Although sometimes our friends and family come visit us abroad, once they leave there is sometimes a sense of loneliness and homesickness. Something that is common and natural response in that we are away from our familiar surroundings, it’s this feeling of nostalgia, sadness, and a longing for the comfort and familiarity of home. So, dealing with homesickness is essential for a positive and fulfilling experience in a foreign environment.

Clubs You will find a wealth of activities available to integrate you into Viennese and Austrian life. There are hundreds of clubs in Vienna, so opportunities are open to your initiative. In the past, IES Abroad students have participated in the following clubs, just to name a few: Afro-Asiatisches Institut: offers various activities for students of all nationalities Club International Universitaire Evangelische Studentengemeinde: Christian student club Jugend-info Wien: a cultural and social information organization for young people Katholische Hochschulgemeinde: Catholic organization...
The Austrian monetary unit is the Euro (€). For more information on the Euro and related topics, please refer to the European Commission. Before departing for Austria, we recommend you exchange your currency for about 200 Euros in order to cover incidental expenses during your first few days in Vienna. Euros can be purchased at large banks and most international airports. During your time abroad, plan to obtain local currency primarily using an ATM card linked to your home bank account. In case of an emergency, however, you should have more than one way to access funds. The following...
Austrian electricity operates on a 230 supply voltage and 50Hz. There are two associated plug types, types C and F. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins and plug type F is the plug which has two round pins with two earth clips on the side.. We suggest you: Purchase a converter and adapter for these items if brought from home. If you bring an extension cord, you will only need one plug converter. Purchase electrical appliances on site. Purchase dual-voltage items such as laptops. To determine whether a device is dual voltage, look for a legend on its power adapter "box" or on the...
The climate of London is usually temperate, neither excessively hot nor extremely cold. The weather is, however, changeable, damp, and often rainy. While each room has its own thermostat, you will find that the British are accustomed to considerably lower indoor temperatures during the winter than you may be. Therefore, sweaters, warm clothes, flannel pajamas, and a heavy outer coat as well as hat, gloves, and scarf are very practical items. Rainwear is a must during the entire year and umbrellas are always useful. Don’t forget to bring comfortable walking shoes! If you plan to visit the...
