Saying Yes

Being abroad has forced me out of my comfort zone in more ways than one. Ever since I was a young girl, uncertainty has been a source of discomfort, but being here has taught me that so much beauty and joy comes from the moments of uncertainty. A small group of students from my program invited me to go to Atacama with them this past weekend. At first thought everything was telling me to stay back, I had never been somewhere with such a high elevation, it was freezing, and I didn’t know how my body would react, but then I remembered that there's freedom found in saying yes.

When in Rome, Dine as the Romans Do!

After spending a full day walking around the city or visiting a famous monument or museum, you’re sure to work up an appetite, and the first thing you’ll want to do is find somewhere to sit, relax, and enjoy an aperitivo (drinks and light snacks) or meal. While it’s tempting to stop at the first restaurant you find outside of the attraction, you might notice that there are many places with large outdoor seating areas, large signs, and big, bolded menus (usually in English, and often also advertising with photos of their dishes).

Preregistration The Course Preregistration Form must be filled out in order for IES Abroad to start preparing your course schedule. As class size may be limited, course preregistration forms will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. It is your responsibility to obtain course approval from your home institution for all courses you intend to take, including alternate courses, before your departure, especially if you intend to fulfill specific degree requirements with those courses. To select courses, you will first submit the Preregistration Form in your MyIESabroad account, which...

Post-Program Research Assistantship: Pros and Cons

So, your time studying abroad has been so great that you’re realizing you’d like to stay even longer and do a research assistantship after the program is over. Congratulations! I loved my time abroad and very much enjoyed my research assistantship. But is a post-program research assistantship through IES Abroad right for you? There are many pros but also a few cons, and my experience has not necessarily reflected that of my peers.

Orientation The mandatory one week-long orientation serves not only as an introduction to the ESS program and the various aspects of life in Freiburg, but also provides the framework for the intensive phase of your German and ESS classes. Program information sessions are also organized to help you orient yourself in Freiburg. Discussion points include housing, health and safety, and academics. This is an ideal opportunity for you to get to know the IES Center staff, study abroad mentors, and fellow students and to become comfortable in your new home in Germany, through activities such as a day...
If you enroll in partner university courses, you are required to complete partner university exams before departure and depart IES Abroad housing the following day. Partner courses at the University of Freiburg for ESS are also three-week modules, with examinations within the modules. If you use a university module instead of an IES module, the exam is in the module period, i.e. before the official move out. If you extend your stay with a fifth module at the university, the exam is also within the extended period - no exams are planned or permitted after the module periods and so also not...
