While videos containing slightly serial voice overs of reddit threads that describe unethical life hacks, in the spirit of exploration and study abroad, I wanted to share with you all some Nice life hacks, that are, don’t worry, all completely ethical!

Navigating the Nice Airport:

  1. The water bottle filling stations are notoriously finicky and odd. But if you are so annoyed at them, and just want some amount of water, there is a manual override button located on the bottom right hand side of each machine!
  2. If you were to get a tram ticket at the airport stations, get ready to fork out 10 euro! But, if you were to buy a tram ticket at any other station, for example the one at your apartment, or maybe the stop right after the airports, the price per tram ticket drops to 1.70 per ride. If you have any guests over, my recommendation is to do them a favor and get them a tram pass before they arrive, so they can enjoy the sweet savings on your return.

Getting around Nice:

To preface this, a little context is needed: There are two main public transportation bus operators in Nice. Lignes d'Azur, which operates the tram and buses within the “Metropole” of Nice, and Zou! which runs buses within the Alpes-Maritimes Department and also across the entire PACA region.

  1. Get a tram pass! As someone under the age of 26 living in Nice, you are eligible to receive a monthly pass for all Lignes d'Azur lines. Instead of paying per ride, I find this cost to be incredibly reasonable and allows me to have a peace of mind that I can go off and do whatever odd adventures I want.
  2. Some Zou! bus lines, while within the Nice Metropole, will allow you to pay with your normal Lignes d'Azur pass. This is a great way to save a little bit of money if going to Villefranche or Canges-sur-Mer for example,

Things to do in Nice:

  1. All of the museums in Nice are free if you are a student, so bring some sort of Student ID that has a date on it. Now, if you are like me and you don’t have a student ID with the date of graduation on it, then request a certificate of enrolment from your home university. Showing this document normally will do the trick.
  2. These student discounts extend to more than just museums in Nice. Often, attractions in other cities will be free or significantly reduced price for you because of either a.) your student status or b.) being under the age of 26 and a French resident. Check before you go to any museum or attraction, and figure out what their policies are for obtaining a "Tarif réduit et gratuité"

  1. This is a tip that works for more than just Nice, but also a good chunk of Europe. Its very normal to forget a water bottle or need to pick up something before you start a long journey, especially if it's over land. When buying your next bottle of water, I recommend going to any decently sized grocery store and walking to the very back, where you will find the large multi packs of 1,5L water bottles. Then simply, just rip one out, and pay for the one. I have not had to pay more than a euro for water since getting here, while the waters sold at train stations or even at the front of the store in the little refrigerators cost at least 2+ euros.
