My Go-To Study Spots in Cape Town

Chancellor Oppenheimer Library

This one had to make the list because it’s THE library. It’s definitely more crowded, and sometimes you have to fight for an outlet—so if that’s not your vibe, keep walking. That said, I really like the convenience, the size, the lower volume, and its proximity to coffee.

Another big plus is the 24/7 Hlanganani Junction, which is perfect for those late-night or early-morning study sessions when the rest of campus is closed. The library is calmer in the early mornings and late afternoons, but usually pretty busy midday. Honestly, though, I’ve never not been able to find a spot. There are tons of study spaces — from private rooms to group rooms—so there’s usually a place for every type of student. And “the dungeon” (a.k.a. the lower level) is completely silent if that’s what you’re looking for.

Empty lecture theater

Shoutout to my counselor, Ms. Adana Patrice who suggested this. Studying in the actual classroom of the class you’re prepping for is surprisingly effective. The idea ties into context-dependent memory—basically, being in a familiar environment can help you recall information more easily. It feels a little odd at first, but it’s super helpful, especially during exam season.

Chis Hani Building (Level 4)

I love this little spot. It’s a bit busier, but if you like the buzz of people around you while you study, this one’s for you. The building also gets a lot of natural light, which makes the space feel open and honestly just beautiful.

Outside of the HPI d-school building

This is where I go when I need to be outside soaking up the sun – but I also have to study. This is a super fun spot on middle campus so around a five-minute walk from the Kremer stop. There is so much seating and there’s a lot of spots in the shade as well as in the sun (these spots in the shade also have power outlets!). I have usually found this spot to be pretty empty typically, or generally not too crowded which is also a plus if you like areas that aren’t too busy. Easily one of my favorites!

THE 777 COFFEE SHOP (66 Keerom St, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, 8000) –

Now we’re getting off of campus and into the city for this one – but totally worth it. Me and a friend one day discovered this coffee shop one night as it was one of only ones open so late (till 9PM) on a Sunday night and decided to stop in to get some work done.

You can actually take the Hiddingh UCT Jammie Shuttle from Tugwell or UCT South, then walk about 10 minutes to get there. It is such a cute hidden gem. The owner was incredibly kind and friendly. He told us about how he had recently opened the coffee shop, and the cafe is named after the Boeing 777 plane, and the entire café has this cool plane theme. It is super super cool and it was a very relaxed and comfortable place to study. There is limited seating though, so keep this in mind in case you’re planning on sitting and studying for a long time.
