Before the start of the consolidation period for exams, IES Abroad Cape Town held a relaxing field trip to the seaside town of Hermanus famously known to be a whale watching destination for students to take a breather now that classes are over to fully engage into exam season.

Here’s how it went:

Friday October 31, 2025

We had a 07:45 A.M. pick up so that we could start heading to Hermanus (a two hour drive from Cape Town with breakfast at a stop along the way. By 11:00 A.M. we had reached the Stony Point Penguin Colony, home to the African Penguin as well as other species like the African Black Oystercatcher and the Cape Cormorants, and reunited with our friend the Egyptian geese from my other wildlife post

After lunch we headed to Cape Agulhas which is where the pacific and indian oceans meet and also the most southernmost tip of the African continent.

Picture of me sitting on a structured pile of rocks with a plaque reading that where I am is Africa’s southernmost point. East of this is the Indian Ocean, and west is the Atlantic Ocean.

After all the driving and exploring, we checked in to the hotel where we unpacked, had dinner and rested for the next day of fun exciting activities.

Saturday November 1, 2025

Today started out with an 8:00 A.M. breakfast leaving around 10 A.M. to the Hermanus Country Market. This Is where we really got to see the town of Hermanus, shopped around the market, explored the beautiful trails, ran into a group of Dassie and got to hang out! We had lunch close to the seaside, this very chill day was a perfect way to relax and enjoy the people and the place surrounding us before having to lock in for consolidation period and soon thereafter, finals.

After our time exploring and shopping we headed back to the hotel to  have our final ENGAGE session in which we got to reflect over our time in Cape Town, the people that we were before coming here (our goals, fears, etc, during the first few weeks)  and the way that we’ve changed or grown since.  This was a really good way to reflect, connect and better understand the people around us, the place that we are in and the people that we are. After which, we were ravenous so we headed to dinner and then closed out our second day in Hermanus.

Sunday November 2, 2025

This morning we woke up early to go whale and other wildlife spotting. After having our final breakfast in the hotel, we loaded on a boat suiting up into (very chic) bright orange  life jackets and jackets and headed out onto the water to see some whales, sharks, seals, penguins, and more!

We had so much fun! Thank you IES Abroad Cape Town!
