U.S.-Based Customized Program Manager (CPM) and Coordinator (CPC):

• Will assist your students in planning and preparing for your program.

Chicago-Based Dean of Students Office and Crisis Management Team:

• Available 24/7 in case of serious student emergencies.

Center-Based Staff (Program Manager/Coordinators):

• Available 24/7 in case of emergencies. Will be your Center contact for the program and work closely with you to prepare and implement the program. Will accompany students on all IES Abroad-sponsored events.

Enhanced Health & Safety:

• Additional predeparture orientations for the cohort prior to arrival on-site. Additional reflection time built into coursework and pre-/post-excursions.

CISI Insurance (Required): 

• This insurance covers IES Abroad students, faculty, and guests anywhere in the world during the specified program dates. Coverage includes doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, mental health treatment, and prescription drugs.

Orientation (Required): 

• Virtual and on-site orientations, including overview of the Center and the city, and comprehensive health and safety.

Walking City Tour:

• Program includes a guided city walking tour.

Meals:

• Welcome and farewell dinners at (sustainable and/or environmental-friendly) restaurants in Freiburg to build sense of community and cohesion within the cohort.

Airport Arrival Support:

• IES Abroad will provide detailed information regarding transportation from the airport to the local check-in location on the arrival date. IES Abroad will also provide detailed information regarding transportation to the local IES Abroad Center for students who must arrive independently due to travel delays.

Transportation Passes:

• IES Abroad will provide transportation passes for the School’s students and faculty member for the period of the program.

Student Housing:

• IES Abroad will arrange housing for the School’s students in a guest house or hotel accommodation. Students will be in double rooms with a shared bathroom and have access to kitchen facilities, or single rooms with a private bathroom and breakfast included. Wi-Fi is available. All students will be placed in the same housing location.

Faculty Housing:

• Faculty Directors are typically housed in single occupancy accommodation, either a private apartment or hotel depending on availability.

Site Visits Within City:

• Program includes at least three integrated site visits that bring together academic focus with cultural interests. Examples include: Vauban District Tour, Freiburg’s Passive Houses Tour, Local Farm Tour, Sustainable Transportation Tour, Dreisam River Tour (Water Restoration Tour), Schönberg Tour, Renewable Energy Tour (Solar-Info-Center or Research Institution).

Day Trips Outside of City:

• Program includes two day trips out of the city that highlight the context of the immediate region. Examples include: Black Forest (Feldberg Mountain), Rhine Valley, Kappel Valley, St. Wilhem Valley, Kaiserstuhl nature reserve, Vosges-Mountains (France).

Field Trips Outside of City:

• Program includes one field trip that will be built into the program that may be linked thematically to the Faculty Director’s course. Accommodations, meals and activities to be included. Examples include: Lake Constance, Swiss Alps (Rhone Valley).

Cultural Events:

• Program includes one cultural event for the University’s students and Faculty Director during the program. Examples include: a local brewery tour, food- or wine tasting with organic background, art workshop.
