U.S.-Based Customized Program Manager (CPM) and Coordinator (CPC):

• Will assist your students in planning and preparing for your program.

Chicago-Based Dean of Students Office and Crisis Management Team:

• Available 24/7 in case of serious student emergencies.

Center-Based Staff (Program Manager/Coordinators):

• Available 24/7 in case of emergencies. Will be your Center contact for the program and work closely with you to prepare and implement the program. Will accompany students on all IES Abroad-sponsored events.

CISI Insurance (Required): 

• This insurance covers IES Abroad students, faculty, and guests anywhere in the world during the specified program dates. Coverage includes doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, mental health treatment, and prescription drugs.

Orientation (Required): 

• Virtual and on-site orientations, including overview of the Center and the city, and comprehensive health and safety.

City Tour:

• This guided tour will take students to all the major sites in Barcelona, including the Gothic Quarter.

Meals:

• Enjoy two delicious meals (Welcome Dinner and Farewell Dinner) at Barcelona's most-loved restaurants to build sense of community and cohesion within the cohort.

Airport Transfer:

• Organized round trip airport transfer available.

Transportation Passes:

• Local transportation passes can be arranged on a customized schedule.

Student Housing:

• Students will be provided single-occupancy accommodation in a student residence hall located within a 30-minute commute of the IES Abroad Center via public transit. Residence hall accommodations come fully furnished and the property includes Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, linens and towels, and common areas. No meals are provided, other than those indicated in the program schedule, but several restaurants, cafes, and eateries are nearby.

Site Visits Within City:

• This program will include five site visits centered around sustainability and urban development. These program components are subject to availability and will be confirmed closer to the program starts. Examples include: Ciutat Vella – a walking tour of Barcelona’s oldest neighborhood, highlighting urban sustainability challenges and solutions; Consell de Cent – Barcelona’s green corridor serving as an example of urban adaptation to climate change; La Fábrica del Sol – an environmental-education facility working to advance energy self-sufficiency, sustainability, and responsible urban development; Mescladis – a socially sustainable company that works for the inclusion of marginalized communities through the restoration sector; and/or Superilla del Poblenou – to learn about the transformation of a neglected working-class neighborhood into a mixeddevelopment and model urban neighborhood.

Day Trips Outside of City:

• Students will spend a full day exploring one of Catalonia’s historic cities or scenic, natural beauty sites. Examples include: Figueres & Cadaqués – Figueres is the birthplace of and home to the museum dedicated to Salvador Dalí, and a short distance away is the picturesque coastal town of Cadaqués; Girona is an ancient city known for its medieval architecture, walled Old Quarter, and the Roman remains of the Força Vella fortress; or Tarragona – a port city, home to ancient ruins from its time as the Roman colony of Tarraco.

Cultural Events:

• Program includes visit to Casa Batlló – considered one of Antoni Gaudí’s masterpieces and one of Barcelona’s grandest and most fantastical pieces of architecture; Museum of the History of Barcelona – an expansive history museum that conserves, researches, communicates, and exhibits the historical heritage of the city of Barcelona, from its Roman origins to present day; Parc Güell – Antoni Gaudí's enormous garden with stunning and distinct architectural elements; Sagrada Familia – Antoni Gaudí's best-known work, is an undisputed symbol of Barcelona and has been under construction since 1882; and a tapas cooking class – learn how to prepare authentic Spanish and Catalan tapas, utilizing fresh, seasonal ingredients from local markets and farms.
