The Dutch monetary unit is the euro (€). The euro functions similarly to the US dollar in that it is subdivided into 100 cents. There are eight-euro coins denominated in 2 and 1 euros, then 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 cents. In the Netherlands, 1- and 2-euro cents are not used and it is common for places to round up to the nearest 5-euro-cent amount. Each euro coin has a common European face and a face designed by each monetary member EU state. All coins can be used in every monetary member EU country. There are seven-euro notes which are differently sized and colored, and come in denominations of...
It is impossible to define a "typical" Dutch person. You will meet many types of people in the Netherlands who have different opinions, attitudes, and habits. The more you interact with Dutch people, the more likely you are to form lasting relationships with them and better understand their culture. During these interactions, use common sense and a sense of objectivity. Be prepared to discuss your views freely and openly, and try to listen with an open mind. You may arrive in the Netherlands with some preconceptions about the Dutch and may encounter some Dutch people with preconceptions about...
Japanese food has become popular in other countries, and you might already be familiar with some typical dishes. On the whole, the diet is a healthy one. It includes a balance of fish and meat, but few dairy products. While a typical Japanese diet is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, it is high in sodium. You will also be able to enjoy other international foods, and many Western-style meals, including fast food.
Amsterdam’s bustling city center is easily accessible by foot or bicycle, with 160 canals, 1,281 bridges, and 90 islands. Founded on Calvinistic principles, today the entrepreneurial spirit of the Dutch culture lives on, as evidenced by its lively arts scene and cafes. The city’s strong work ethic produced a society supportive of Dutch masters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh. The original religious zeal has been transformed into the uniquely Amsterdammer gezellig frame of mind. According to DutchAmsterdam.nl, "Locals and foreigners alike will tell you that the word cannot be translated...

My First Bush Doof

When I was invited on a camping trip with the UNSW Outdoors Club, I thought it would be a 10 person ordeal around a campfire with a guitar. We would go climbing and hiking and maybe swimming, and at the end of the day decompress and joke around. Three days before the camping trip, I was added to a Facebook event page called Dam Cliffs Doof, with about 100 other people. It was at that point that I realized a doof is a party in the woods with no one around. It’s chaos, and it’s supposedly a lot of fun.

Travel tips and dealing with travel anxiety

Travel is a huge part of studying abroad, and to be quite honest, I had no idea just how big traveling while abroad was until I got here. I chose London because I knew I would absolutely love living here, and the opportunities that I got to travel while abroad would just be the cherry on top of things. Really, I only had three places that were absolute must-dos, and for the rest, I really didn’t know what would happen. Previously to coming abroad, I didn’t have a lot of travel experience that wasn’t me packing up my car and spending the weekend somewhere.
