The day after the official arrival date, the on-site portion of your IES Abroad program will begin with a mandatory five-day orientation program. During orientation, you will become familiar with the IES Abroad staff, your peers, and the city of Rome. Once on-site, you will receive detailed information about transportation, official course registration, housing accommodations, personal health and safety, field trips, and other aspects of the program. If you have applied for an internship, you will also meet with the Internship Coordinator who will give you all the necessary details to start...
All students must arrive in Rome by 5:30pm on the official arrival date. Rome is served by two airports. You will likely arrive at the main one, Fiumicino/Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO), which is used by most carriers and for nearly all intercontinental flights. The second one, Roma Ciampino Airport (CIA), is mainly served by intra-European and low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and EasyJet. Arriving via FCO Airport If you arrive at FCO airport between 8:30am and 5:30pm, you will be greeted by an IES Abroad staff member holding an IES Abroad sign in the arrivals area (after exiting the baggage...

Remember that you will not be excused from academic obligations, including final exams or required IES Abroad events, in order to travel independently. You can easily make personal travel plans once on-site!

You will preregister for courses by submitting the Preregistration Form that we will post in your...

The Not-So-Easy Freshman Class...

Adapting to American University life was already an adjustment, so switching to university life abroad felt like a whole new world. Once classes at the IES Abroad center began, we had a two-week shopping period. During these two weeks, we could attend any classes we want to and were able to drop and add classes as we see fit. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. Before I left for Nantes, I was able to secure a list of classes that would work for both my majors with my academic advisor so I thought that I had a pretty concrete idea of what I was taking.

Nantes: An Environmental City

One of the aspects that I’ve come to love the most about Nantes is its strong dedication to and integration of environmental consciousness throughout daily life. Although it is presently difficult to tell because of the current sanitation strike causing garbage to line the streets (an aside: I have definitely had the opportunity to see the French exercise their right to protest in response to President Emmanuel Macron’s retirement reforms), I am usually very impressed with the way environmental awareness is incorporated into daily life.
