Why I Decided to Study Abroad and How I Picked my Program

When applying to college, I was someone that knew I wanted to go abroad. I have always seen it as a unique opportunity to go live in another country without having to commit for an extended period of time. I think that the opportunity to go explore another country and just be a student is not something that will be available later in life. I recognized that it would be significantly more work and a larger commitment to move abroad after I graduate and am working a full-time job, especially if children are eventually in the picture.

Internships offer a unique, real-world experience combined with professional skill building and cultural immersion. Placements are available to students of all language levels, though students with more advanced Spanish usually have a wider array of internship options available. Placements will provide work experience of eight (8) to ten (10) hours per week (90 + hours total/ 20 hour internship seminar) for fourteen (14) weeks. Deciding on whether to study abroad

At the beginning of my sophomore year of college, I was unsure of whether to study abroad. I had already taken a gap year before college where I lived abroad for six months. I absolutely loved the experience of (attempting) to learn a new language, trying new spices, learning how to bargain in the street markets, making new friends, and figuring out a different bus system; however, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to undergo all that again.

Preparing For Study Abroad: Here We Go!

My preparations for the upcoming semester are very different than most of my friends staying in the US and even my friends going abroad because I have an autoimmune disease called Primary Immunodeficiency Disease (PIDD). This means that on top of organizing my visa, picking classes, and applying for housing, I am also communicating with my doctors and the IES Abroad staff to develop a plan for my medical care and medications. At first, all of this felt very overwhelming and serious, but I soon learned that with the help of the IES Abroad staff, it was all very doable.

Arrivederci, Los Angeles! Ciao, Roma!

After several months of waiting, I am set to leave Los Angeles on Sunday to begin my study abroad experience. As I look to the fall with eagerness, anticipation, and excitement for what my study abroad semester in Rome will bring, I am counting down my remaining shifts at work and saying goodbye to dear friends before I embark on an incredible journey. Although I am still several days from my arrival at the Fiumicino airport, my suitcase has been elaborately packed with some outfits I cannot wait to don on the streets of Rome.
