Holiday Availability: All IES Abroad offices will be closed on Dec 24, Dec 25, Dec 31, and Jan 1 as we take some time to celebrate. During the weeks of 12/22 and 12/29, our team will be smaller, so responses may take longer than usual. Thanks for your understanding—and happy holidays!
I remember when I received my homestay assignment, as soon as I saw that my family spoke "some" English, I was scared. I emailed IES Abroad asking if they had a family that spoke more English, since I had no confidence in my French or nonexistent Arabic skills. Yet, they told me not to worry, that almost all of the families had enough English skills for us to get by. More importantly, they reassured me that I would develop foreign language skills in a way I did not imagine would be possible. I am forever grateful for IES Abroad for not changing my homestay family.
While in my last blog I focused on the things I may try and do differently in my next semester abroad, I wanted to take this final blog as an opportunity to dive into the amazing experiences I’ve been able to have in Berlin. Between newly discovered fond memories and learning opportunities, this entire semester has been something I will certainly remember for the rest of my life.
As my time in Santiago comes to an end, I have been ruminating about what I will miss the most. Beyond the delicious sopaipillas (traditional Chilean fried pumpkin dough), musicians in the metro, reggaeton music at the discos (clubs), and fresh frutilla (strawberries) sold on the streets, the kindness of Chileans is one of a kind. I often use this story to exemplify Chileans’ generosity. I was running late to my class at 7:30 in the morning.
I’m a New York-based and Manila-born journalism and history student in my junior year. I’ve been to 37 countries (and counting!), so travel has always been my lifelong love. I'm beyond excited to share my adventures with you!
I’m a Comparative Literature major at Haverford College with an interest in how cultures and stories interact with each other. I love baking, writing, hiking, and exploring new places. And I can never resist the siren song of a good library!
Hi! I am a junior at Beloit College studying Biology and International Relations, with a Spanish minor. I play college soccer, and I love to try new foods (but I'm a really bad cook), and I love to read.
I'm from Ohio but I've traveled since I was little so I've got to see many different countries and experience different perspectives and ways of life. I enjoy meeting new people and trying new things. I can't wait to see what Ecuador has to offer!
Hello! I'm Jo, an economics student at Pomona College, originally from New York and later a CA San Diegan since the age of 11. I love to run and am excited about the program!
