My college on the Galápagos is a single peach-colored building across the street from Playa Mann, a white-sand beach covered with sea lions. One day during a class break, I was strolling on the beach taking photos when a shadow blotted out the sun: a flock of magnificent frigatebirds was descending on me! I began filming and realized the birds were actually dive bombing a fresh sea-lion placenta.
It’s final paper writing time here in Nantes, which means we’re collectively discovering that there’s more research to be done in France than that of Muscadet at a vineyard or camembert at a Saturday market. This week, we’re putting the study in “study abroad.”
I’ve dedicated most of my posts to the abroad part of my experience in France, whether that is visiting castles or practicing my French with strangers, but I promise I have an academic life here as well, even if it does look incredibly different from the one I lead in the U.S.
Going abroad in the fall brings a big dilemma come November: what do I do for Thanksgiving?
For me, Thanksgiving is the one holiday of the year where my extended family gathers together. We eat copious amounts of food, fight about politics and watch football. From what I gather, that tends to be the “American experience.”
Technically, the title should read, “LGBT*Q and Allies at TCD”, but that would mess with the rhythm and I couldn’t bring myself to do it. The point, though, is this: when reading the “Diversity” section of the “Get Informed” page provided for students on Dublin, there’s a section which says the following:
On Monday we took a field trip to two non-profits in the highlands of San Cristóbal. Both organizations were run by passionate, energetic, dedicated individuals… but were they really getting the right things accomplished?

It’s the beginning of the end, as our last days in Paris are starting to fly by. And as it gets closer to Christmas time, Paris gets more and more magical which is going to make it even harder to leave this place. Sometimes I am jealous when I see pictures of people flying all over Europe to really cool destinations, but then I remember that Paris is the most amazing city in the world (I’m not biased, I swear) and I realize that there is no place I would rather be right now.
