Making A Change One Sailor At A time

Thanks to our amazing Portuguese professors Ana and Renata, our entire group was invited to Niteroi to visit a non-profit organization called Projecto Grael. Projecto Grael uses sailing, aquatic and environmental education, as well as professional training in mechanical work to teach youth about leadership, responsibility, and community while simultaneaously providing them with greater access to professional and athletic opportunities.

Next Stop: PETROPOLIS!

For our history class, we visited Petropolis, also know as the Imperial City. Petropolis was once the summer getaway spot for the imperial family during the 19th century because of its lower temperatures and lush natural beauty. We were lucky enough to visit this cool area and learn more about its history. Here are some great photos from our trip!

The Beauty of the Unknown

Whether we like it or not, a major part of our lives consists of creating and following through with daily routines and rituals: when we wake up in the morning, how we like our coffee, what modes of transportation we take, and how we spend our free time.  Just as quickly as we develop these routines, they quickly become a part of ourselves and we all recognize that same dread when all of a sudden they have to change.

Where Has June Gone?

Life is getting just a little bit more hectic as we reach the end of June.

I have learned that one of my favorite activities in Chile is trying new foods (and of course taking pictures of it)!  Some of the things I tried this week includes:

1.     Choriana: french fries topped with beef and a sunny side up egg

2.     A typical mapuche (native) tea made with flowers

A Cross-Country Experiment in Sleep Deprivation

I took this past weekend as an opportunity to explore. Despite the fact that IES had planned a trip to visit a farm on Saturday, I took a trip to Galway for the second half of the week. If there's one thing you learn from this blog, please let it be this: At some point in your life, you should travel alone. If nothing else, you'll learn to handle a problem. Example? Within an hour of coming to Galway, I got lost trying to find the Salthill Promenade. I found a canal instead, where a woman helped to redirect me to my destination.
