Chips and Waffles and Shakes OH MY!

London is an absolutely amazing city, and I knew that from the moment I arrived. There was no greater feeling than coming out from the Holborn Tube Station, being dropped off in the heart of the city, and being left to realize that I had three months to explore every nook, cranny, and alleyway that this new home had to offer. I spent my first week trying to do every activity that came to mind.

Advice for Students Traveling Abroad

In the dead of morning on October 21st, I’m leaving for my second non-school sponsored trip outside of Nantes. That’s the only kind of trip I’ll be having from now on, as last weekend we went to the Chateaux de la Loire (well, just four: Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry, Amboise, and Chenonceau). This week, though, is a special sort of chaos, as we have a full week and two days off for the Toussaint holidays.

Trying not to Die in the French Countryside

I’m still mildly shocked that I’m not dead or lost somewhere in the French countryside. Since my sense of direction and ability to be on time for things are both nonexistent, I planned my weekend trip to Paris and Pierrefonds happily, but with the looming feeling that I was signing my death warrant. I was going to Paris all alone, then on Saturday taking another train to the town of Compiègne, which offered a two-bus trip to the tiny village of Pierrefonds, the final destination of that day trip.

I Made a Giant Flying Robot Spider Pee

By the time I got to my arachnid adventures, I’d already seen a gigantic wooden elephant, watched a bunch of mechanical sea creatures move in creaking patterns on the Carrousel des Mondes Marins, and ridden a sea serpent. So my day was off to a fantastic start, and to make it better the sky was overcast and sprinkling slightly, and I love rain (and the rain was about to get much more intense). This was several weekends ago during the IES Abroad outing to the Machines de l’Ile, one of Nantes’s main attractions.

Kiwi Land

This past weekend I spent 4 days in Queenstown, New Zealand. Overall, this city is a MUST visit and is definitely my favourite city so far. It is basically a college students dream place because majority of the people living there are in their 20’s and might be the friendliest people I have ever met.

I travelled to Queenstown with two of my best friends and we stayed at the HeartLand hotel right outside of town. I would definitely recommend staying there, it was inexpensive and amazing location (only a 5-minute walk to town).

coping with homesickness feat. Disneyland

My first few weeks here I was suffering from the worst case of homesickness. Starting that very first night sitting alone in my little chambre de bonne, I just laid in bed bawling my eyes out, texting my mom about how much of a mistake I thought I had just made by coming here. I had gone through the whole summer not preparing myself for abroad at all so everything about leaving home hit me like a ton of bricks in one moment.

je suis allé a Normandy

My biggest piece of advice when studying with IES Abroad is signing up for any and all excursions offered. It's an amazing opportunity to see more of France without worrying about finding it on your own. Plus it's all covered in what you have already paid so why not take a weekend of prepaid tours and food? So far my favorite trip has been our overnight trip to Normandy. It's hard for me to describe just how special this experience was, but for the sake of the blog I'm going to try my best.
