A 7+ magnitude earthquake struck today off New Zealand's South Island at 10:35 a.m. CST. The epicenter of the quake was approximately 20 miles northwest of Christchurch.
According to news reports, no injuries have been reported and there is currently no tsunami warning in effect. Initial damage reports indicate that there is some damage to roads and bridges in Christchurch, and that some sections of the city are without power, but no buildings have collapsed. In keeping with IES Abroad health and safety protocol, any updated information will be communicated to all IES Abroad students, their parents, and their home schools.
We are not yet aware that any university functions, including classes, will be affected in any way by the earthquake, but if there will be any class cancellations or relocations due to damage or loss of power to any university facilities, we will update students as soon as we are aware of them.
