Best of 2019: Check Out 15 Featured IES Summer Internships

You probably already know about the positive impact a summer internship can have on your career. And how an internship can give you next-level work experience. And how an internship abroad is a great way to boost your résumé. (Should we continue?)

But have you wondered what you’d actually be doing while you intern in the summer? Because internship placements are based on your unique interests, everyone’s internship experience is one of a kind. With that in mind, here’s what a number of IES interns who worked around the world this summer did.

 

IES Intern in Barcelona with Supervisor

Legal Internship | Barcelona Summer Internship
Anika G. (Spanish Major, Business Administration Minor ǀ University of Colorado Boulder)

As part of the International Relations & Protocols Department, Anika connected with other countries’ similar organizations to coordinate events, prepared information packets for attorneys traveling internationally on behalf of the association, and completed daily tasks such as proofreading, translations, and legal research.

Medical Research Internship | Berlin Summer Internship
Sophia M. (Biological Sciences Major, German Language Minor ǀ University of Nebraska)

Sophia interned at an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) research center performing technical microscope and physical lab work. She also conducted scoping reviews to examine: the foci of other related studies, what might be missing in the existing body of knowledge, and therefore what could be investigated in the future. Sophia was also able to direct her experience towards her interest in psychology-related projects.

Social Media Marketing Internship ǀ Cape Town Summer Internship
Tully R. (Marketing Major, Philosophy Minor ǀ University of Iowa)

Tully interned at a digital marketing agency, which works with some of the leading brands in South Africa, from retail to real estate, as well as various international organizations from charities to chocolatiers. As a Marketing Intern, Tully primarily focused on social media with additional communications and media duties.

Energy Internship ǀ Dublin Summer Internship
Zac H. (Business Analytics and Information Systems Major ǀ University of Iowa)

Zac interned at a renewable energy startup, whose current focus is rolling out solar energy in Ireland. Zac worked in all aspects of the business, including visiting job sites in Northern Ireland and conducting analysis work with both internally- and government-sourced data.

Finance Internship ǀ Hong Kong Summer Internship
Tucker P. (Finance Major, Economics Minor ǀ Southern Methodist University)

Tucker worked in the finance department of a blockchain company that assists other local blockchain companies in developing their unknown market value. The company offers an incubator setting so newer companies can access blockchain technology or expertise and build a mutually beneficial ecosystem.

Music Management Internship ǀ London Summer Internship
Deja W. (Journalism & Mass Communications Major ǀ University of Iowa)

Deja interned with a music management company and assisted with all aspects of artist and fan management. She worked on audio/visual editing, merchandise campaigns, artist tour budgeting and logistics, online presence and social networks, graphic design and editing, research, compiling metadata, proofing documents, and drafting press releases.

Content Marketing Internship ǀ London Summer Internship
Hope J. (Graphic Design and Communications Major ǀ University of Missouri)

Hope worked as an Editorial and Content Intern for a digital marketing agency. She researched new business opportunities, wrote content for clients, shadowed team members across departments, assisted with photo and video shoots, attended meetings and contributed to brainstorm sessions, wrote and published a weekly blog post about her experience, and planned and presented a ‘Lunch & Learn’ for the staff.

Accounting Internship ǀ Milan Summer Internship
Matt O. (Accounting and Finance Major ǀ Indiana University)

Matt interned with an accounting firm focused on industrial and trading sectors, specifically in the areas of tax, accounting, law, and business management. He worked on both the accounting and business administration teams to perform tax and auditing reporting and worked cross-departmentally to investigate potential balance sheet discrepancies.

Gallery Management Internship ǀ New York Summer Internship
Giulia P. (Art History Major ǀ Università degli Studi Roma Tre)

Giulia interned at a contemporary art gallery. Giulia managed artwork inventory and catalogued artist portfolios, installed an exhibition for a new show, implemented a gallery management system, delivered materials to artist studios, managed all social media accounts, researched media contacts and drafted press releases, handled reception duties, and guided gallery visitors and tour groups.

Podcast Internship ǀ Paris Summer Internship 

Jacques R. (Communications Major ǀ University of Minnesota)

Jacques interned with a gastronomy podcast, which interviews French chefs about their lives. Jacques worked on cross-cultural marketing and making the podcast, which is based in France and recorded in French, more accessible to English speakers.

Government Internship ǀ Rome Summer Internship
Kate S. (International Studies Major, Russian Minor ǀ Indiana University)

Kate interned with an Italian government agency that builds bridges between the people of Europe and the Arabian Gulf. She produced written work; monitored EU and Gulf policies and news; assisted senior staff in research; and attended conferences, seminars, and international relations-related events, while also helping with social media.

Publishing Internship ǀ Santiago Summer Internship
Rebecca C. (English and Creative Writing Major, Spanish Minor ǀ University of Iowa)

Rebecca interned at a publishing house promoting a diverse array of authors and subject matter. For part of her internship, she performed research and learned about Chile’s rich literary culture and history by visiting a number of bookshops in various neighborhoods throughout the city that sell books published by the company.

Research & Development Internship | Shanghai Summer Engineering Internship
Jake K. (Engineering Major | Lehigh University)

Jake worked for an intelligent equipment company as a Research and Development Assistant. He utilized his skills in a solid-modeling, computer-aided design and engineering program to create parts, edited and assembled technical instruction booklets, and managed product supply forms.

Recreation Marketing Internship ǀ Sydney Summer Internship 
Kate D. (Advertising and Marketing Major, Accounting Minor ǀ Texas Christian University)

Kate interned with a surfing school on one of Sydney’s most iconic beaches. Kate’s duties included assisting clients in the surf shop, organizing lesson sessions using their booking software, taking photos during lessons and processing photos to present to clients and for marketing materials, and participating in daily operations.

Policy Research Internship ǀ Vienna Summer Internship
Tasmin F. (Management Major ǀ University of Tennessee) & Chris B. (International Business Major, Management Minor ǀ University of Nebraska)

Tasmin and Chris interned with an international advocacy and research organization headquartered in Vienna. They conducted data analysis, processed expenses, published event pages on the website, edited publications for researchers, created presentations, attended various seminars, and participated in biweekly staff meetings.
