Why I Chose to Study Abroad in London

When I first thought about studying abroad, I knew I wanted more than just a change of scenery or a temporary break from my routine. I wanted an experience that would challenge me, expand my worldview, and push me to grow personally, academically, and culturally. I hoped to step outside of everything familiar and see who I could become in a place where I would have to navigate new systems, people, and stories.

As a Vietnamese Asian-American and child of immigrants, storytelling has been my anchor. It is the way I connect with others, make sense of my identity, and bridge the cultures that have shaped me. Growing up, I learned to listen deeply. Whether that was to my family’s stories, to the communities around me, or to the narratives that often go unheard. Studying abroad felt like the next extension of that practice. It is a chance to immerse myself in new communities, reflect on my own story, and share those experiences in ways that feel authentic and meaningful.

London immediately stood out as the place where all of that could happen. The city’s cultural diversity is not just a statistic. It is something you feel in every corner of the city. As someone who loves trying new foods, exploring different neighborhoods, and capturing moments through photography, London felt like a place where my hobbies could thrive. Whether I am tasting dishes at markets, photographing street musicians, or discovering hidden parks, I know this city will offer endless opportunities to experience life from fresh angles.

My love of singing and live music also made London an exciting choice. The city’s music scene is legendary, from the intimate jazz clubs to iconic concert venues. I can already imagine myself attending shows, discovering new artists, and maybe even joining an ensemble to connect with people who share the same passion.

As a football fan, the energy surrounding the sport in London is something that I have always wanted to be a part of. Whether it is catching a match at a local pub or joining friends to cheer for rival teams. Excitement looms at every corner in London.

London also appeals to my outdoorsy side. While London is famous for its urban identity, the city has vast parks and nature reserves that are perfect for hiking. I am excited to take weekend trips to places just outside the city. Places to find a moment to reflect in the coastal paths, rolling hills, and scenic trails with a breath of fresh air.

Academically, the IES Abroad Study London program is a perfect fit for my love of British literature and culture. As someone who reads constantly, studying these subjects in a city where they originated adds depth and context that cannot be replicated anywhere else. Walking the same streets that inspired famous writers, visiting historic libraries, and exploring museums gives learning a sense of presence and connection that I have craved.

Ultimately, I chose London because it is a city that promises growth, challenge, and connection. It is a city that invites curiosity, rewards openness, and encourages exploration not only of the world but the parts of yourself that have not had a chance to surface yet.

To anyone thinking of studying abroad: follow the experiences that excite, push you, and spark your curiosity. Take the leap. When you do, you will not just discover a new city, you will discover new parts of yourself.
