Vienna, the city where IES Abroad began more than 70 years ago, set the stage for our 11th Annual Study Abroad Film Festival—marking the first time the celebration was held outside the United States. Students, alumni, and film lovers gathered to honor the power of storytelling and support IES Abroad scholarships.

Charlie Dermody (Indiana University | IES Abroad Milan, Fall 2024) earned the Grand Prize for his heartfelt film “Maybe.”

The award was presented by last year's winner Connor Sorg , an IES Abroad Milan alum, Study Abroad Film Festival Juror, and student filmmaker, music artist, and recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin.

Charlie Dermody received the $1,500 Grand Prize, and his win will help fund a $5,000 IES Abroad Barbara Bobrich Annual Scholarship for a future Indiana University student with financial need, thanks to a $600,000 gift from the late Barbara Bobrich.

Our Festival and Charlie received lots of love from the media including a segment on WGN Daytime Chicago! Check out all the media coverage.

Maybe

"I didn’t prepare anything because I already felt like I’d won just by being here. Vienna waits for you and calls you back. Studying abroad taught me to take the leap—to throw myself off the deep end and start living in the moment instead of sitting in the backseat, hoping one day my dreams would come true."

“Flashback to about 11 years ago, iPhones are becoming much more of an actual camera in your hand, and that revolutionized what we could do in Marketing, so I went into my bosses office and said ‘I think we should have a Film Festival - we’ll it online on Facebook, which is where it originated, and just see what happens' ... I never thought we would get here.”
