Arnold Schönberg was an Austrian and American composer, music theorist, teacher and writer, who was among the first modernists to transform the practice of harmony in 20^th-century classical. Born into a lower middle-class Jewish family in Vienna in 1874, he was living in Berlin but vacationing in France when the Nazis seized power in 1933. Understanding the possible dangers that lay ahead, Schönberg emigrated to the United States with his family, eventually settling in California. The Arnold Schönberg Center, established in 1998 in Vienna, is a repository of the composer’s archival legacy and a cultural center. Don’t miss the chance to learn more about one of the great composers of the 20^th century in his own words, music, and art.

Tucked away inside Vienna’s old town is the Jewish Museum, a center of art, culture, and history that gives testament to the profound role of the Jewish community in the city’s past and present. During this private tour with IES Abroad faculty member, Tim Corbett, and museum curator, Caitlin Gura, you will catch a glimpse into the evolution and daily life of the city’s Jewish population, learn about how Vienna tragic role in the Holocaust and learn how the Vienna Jewish community today is central  part of the cultural, financial, and emotional life of the city.

There is perhaps no better way to understand a culture than through its food. Join us in this small group experience where we will do just that by learning firsthand how to bake traditional Viennese rolls from an expert Austrian baker. All guests will then enjoy the fruits of their labour, along with fresh locally crafted butter and another Vienna staple, locally made apricot preserves.

There is perhaps no better way to get to know a city than through its food, and you’ll do just that on this private walking food tour with IES Abroad alumna and faculty member, Gretl Sartorius. Sample Viennese and Austrian delicacies while walking Vienna’s innere stadt (“inner city”) and learning about the close relationship between Vienna’s history and how it has shaped its culinary traditions.

Long considered a cultural, economic, and political center of not just Austria but also Europe, Vienna has a long and storied history that dates back to the first century when the Romans established a military camp on the site of today’s city center. During this walking tour with guide Stefan Scholz, you will step back in time to explore Vienna through the ages. From ancient churches to important landmarks, royal residences to stately museums, don’t miss this chance to explore Vienna’s ancient and beautiful city center.

Bounded by the rivers Triesting, Gölsen, Traisen and Danube, and on the border of the Mostviertel and the Industrieviertel, two of the four quarters of Lower Austria, the Walk in the Vienna Woods activity will be breathtaking afternoon spent with fellow alumni and friends in the forest on the outskirts of Vienna. We will be led on this walk by IES Abroad staff member, Dieter Strobl.
