GR 101 - German Language in Context: Novice Abroad I
This course is designed for students with no prior experience in German and provides a comprehensive introduction to the language and culture. It aims to develop foundational skills that allow students to function in basic, everyday
situations in German-speaking environments - both in and outside the classroom.
Through a communicative, task-based approach, students build competence across the five skills of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and intercultural communication. They will learn to engage in simple interactions, such as greeting others, asking for information, ordering food, talking about themselves and their immediate
surroundings, discussing plans, and reflecting on their semester abroad. Students also gain insight into everyday life,
customs, and communicative norms in German-speaking cultures, with a particular focus on Vienna, Austria, as the
immediate cultural context.
