CU 250 - Modern Germany: a journey through culture, politics, and identity
This course offers an in-depth and thought-provoking exploration of the cultural, societal, historical, and political forces that shape modern Germany. Designed as an immersive intellectual journey, it invites students to critically examine one of Europe’s most influential nations through the lens of identity, tradition, innovation, and global relevance.
In the first part of the course, we delve into Germany’s diverse cultural landscape, analyzing how regional traditions coexist with progressive movements in a society marked by constant change. Students will explore concepts of cultural identity and region al distinctiveness, gaining a nuanced understanding of how these elements contribute to the broader national narrative.
The second part shifts focus to the intersection of politics and identity. Key contemporary issues—including immigration, healthcare reform, educational transformation, and the rise of populist movements—will be discussed to understand their impact on Germany’s evolving self-image and policy direction.
