Now in its seventh year, the IES Abroad Study Abroad Film Festival features inspiring, high quality, creative short films that will leave you with a deep sense of wanderlust and appreciation of the power of study abroad. In a time when travel is almost nearly impossible, these student films remind us that when the world is ready it’s still worth exploring because experiencing cultures and places different to our own provides perspective that fosters tolerant, empathetic, open global leaders, who we need now more than ever.

Public voting takes place on the IES Abroad website from October 5th-14th, and the winner will be announced at a virtual event via YouTube Live on October 15th at 5:30 p.m. (CST). The event is free (yes, totally free), and popcorn is encouraged! Attendees must register beforehand.

Our prominent jury of directors, editors, producers, and screenwriters, all of whom are either IES Abroad alumni or film studies faculty from the organization’s international Centers watch and score all Semi-Finalist films. The top three student filmmakers become our Finalists. The film with the most votes at the end of the voting period is announced as the Grand Prize Winner of the Study Abroad Film Festival and awarded $1,500.

Meet Kiubon: (IES Abroad Nantes - French Language Immersion, Fall 2019 | Claremont McKenna College) After living eighteen formative years in charming Columbus, Ohio, Kiubon hopped on over to sunny Claremont, California to kick off his grand venture of self-discovery and growth in a higher education setting. Since then, he has jumped out of an airplane and eaten McDonalds in nine different countries (having previously never left North America prior to Claremont). Currently, Kiubon runs the wedding film company 12:10 Films with his two hometown friends. In the future, Kiubon aspires to feel the wind slap his face while falling from the sky a couple more times and stumble over his words while ordering McDonald's in a country's native language. But until then, Kiubon walks through life with arms wide open waiting with excitement to catch whatever falls his way.

About If I Could Put Into Words:  A life lesson on the beauty of sharing food is discovered through a group of special friends.

In the rare moments you do catch him without his gear, he’s probably enjoying a bean-based meal with friends, studying Japanese, and smiling very wide.
