Celebrating Trailblazers from Wake Forest University, Spelman College, and Case Western Reserve University

At IES Abroad, we believe in the transformative power of global education. This year, at our 2024 Annual Conference in Chicago, we had the distinct honor of recognizing three extraordinary individuals whose work has significantly advanced study abroad. With great pride, we presented the Lifetime Achievement Award, Professional Development Award, and Volunteer of the Year Award to leaders who have helped shape the future of international education.

Volunteer of the Year: Kline Harrison, Wake Forest University

Kline Harrison, Vice Provost for Global Affairs at Wake Forest University, has been a steadfast partner during one of the most challenging times in our history. As Chair of the General Conference throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Kline provided the steady leadership and strategic direction we needed to navigate unprecedented uncertainty. His guidance ensured that IES Abroad emerged more resilient than ever.

Even after his term as Chair was set to end, Kline graciously extended his service, guiding us through two presidential transitions. His collaborative approach and accessibility fostered a strong sense of unity within the IES Abroad Consortium, ensuring that institutions, students, and staff felt supported every step of the way. Kline’s impact on IES Abroad—and the broader study abroad community—will be felt for years to come, and we are deeply grateful for his enduring commitment.

We are thrilled to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to ‘Dimeji Togunde, Vice Provost for Global Education and Professor of International Studies at Spelman College. ‘Dimeji’s career exemplifies visionary leadership in expanding opportunities for students of African descent and advancing diversity and inclusion in global education.

Under his leadership, Spelman College has strategically aligned study abroad initiatives with institutional priorities, earning top rankings from the Institute of International Education and other prestigious organizations. ‘Dimeji’s influence extends well beyond Spelman. Through his involvement with the Atlanta Global Studies Center, Cultural Vistas, Diversity Abroad, and more, he has championed internationalization across higher education. His legacy of dedication, innovation, and student-centered programming will continue to shape the field for generations to come.

Professional Development Award: Kevin Sullivan, Case Western Reserve University

Kevin Sullivan, Assistant Director of Education Abroad at Case Western Reserve University, is the recipient of this year’s Professional Development Award for his outstanding efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion. Kevin’s work has been especially impactful for students with mobility challenges, ensuring that all students—regardless of ability—can access the benefits of study abroad.

Through his involvement in the Diversity Workshop Abroad in London and his thought leadership at our Annual Conference, Kevin has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to equity. On campus, he has forged strong partnerships with faculty, enhancing opportunities for students across academic disciplines, including STEM. His innovative ideas and collaborative spirit continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students, and we are grateful for his contributions to advancing international education.

These honorees exemplify what it means to lead with heart, vision, and dedication. Their achievements have not only strengthened their home institutions but have also enriched the broader study abroad community—and we are proud to celebrate their extraordinary impact.

At IES Abroad, we remain committed to fostering transformative global experiences. Recognizing these leaders reminds us why our work matters and inspires us to continue building a more inclusive, connected world through education.

We can’t wait to see who our 2025 Partner Award Winners will be! Next year, our Annual Conference is going international for the first time ever. To celebrate our 75th Anniversary, we’ll be hosting the Annual Conference in Vienna on October 15-17 and hope you can join us. Registration will open in the new year.
